Could a faulty drive damage a mobo?

I think it damaging the motherboard is unlikely. However was it just a plain plastic bag? Because Im pretty sure those produce a lot of static electricity when moved around, and I don't think that will play nicely with your HDD's likely exposed PCB. But if it hasn't moved at all, it won't produce any static electricity. Odds are it'll work fine or not at all. If it were me, I would throw it into my main system to test.
