1060 for dual 4k monitor

Go to solution Solved by WereCat,

You can output to the monitors with prety much any graphics card that has at least HDMI 2.0 or DP 1.2.

GTX 1060 6GB is about the same as GTX 980 except it has 2GB more VRAM. In gaming it will perform almost the same.

In the software you use, the GTX 1060 6GB will actualy be better since 3D software definitely can use that extra VRAM.

I am not sure about getting AMD card for this kind of software. I know some of these can take advantage of OpenCL but with CUDA you can be sure that the graphics acceleration will 100% work with any of these.

Anyway, GTX 1060 6GB is a good choice but you may want to pick up used GTX 1070 or new if you can since 8GB of VRAM can be very helpful in your case.

If you are certain the software you use can take a full advantage of OpenCL, then AMD RX 580 8GB or Vega 56 is a better choice though.

Recently my asus Strix 980 died and now I am looking for a replacement. My system is 3.5+ years old with i7 5960x processor and 32gb ram. I also own 2 4k monitors and wanted to know if 1060 is a good replacement for my 980? I will build a new system next year so I am not looking to spend too much on GPUs and want something that can power both my monitors and also is good for some casual gaming.

The 1060 is pretty much the Same as the 980. You might get a couple more fps. It's not really worth it.

I would say that it is the perfect replacement for the gtx 980, as it is as powerful, but costs less. His video card died and that is why they want a replacement. "Im not looking to spend too much on the gpu"

If he only does casual gaming gtx 1060 is fine

I only see your reply if you @ me.

Actually it's fairly solidly in between the 970 and 980.

If you're looking for a better GPU, used 980 Tis are fairly cheap ($250 or less), and they offer performance around a 1070. Used 1080s a re relatively cheap but I saw you're going to do a full build soon and don't want to spend too much. Why don't you just buy your ideal GPU now so you don't have to later?

Are you trying to do some 4k gaming? what's your budget/country for a GPU? And what software do you need to run? Any modernish GPU can output 2 4k 60hz displays.

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

No, I am. Not trying to do 4k gaming. I use softwares like Autodesk Maya, Zbrush, 3ds max etc. Mostly 3d software.

Maybe you can upgrade your GPU now instead of next year. But if you don't want to do that, get a used card within your budget. Like @Cereal5 mentioned  used 980TIs and used 1080s are good value

20 series gpu are extremely expensive right now in my country. 2080ti almost cost $2000 and 2080 costs $1500.

If you aren't doing gaming a cheap workstation card might be better, Or just get a used 980ti

better yet Vega FE has 16Gbs of VRAM on the "Cheap" which may be useful for all the 3D stuff and it comes with some optimizations in the drivers for pro workloads.
