Smartphone Rant (October 2018)

aeadespeacock

Smartphones are becoming more and more inpractical, the cameras aren't really getting much better nowadays. it's all this "dual camera" and artificial nonsense. I think we need more phones with large camera lenses like the Nokia Lumia 1020. They are also getting way too hard to fucking use, so as to make things easier I think we need to be looking at somthing like the Samsung Galaxy Gold (GO GOOGLE IT!) or even a slide out qwerty keyboard on the next Blackberry (The Key 3) that would be ace! NO ONE! gives a fuck about stupid "Bezle-less dissplays". At the end of the day screens will crack in the end but at least if you have a ("QWERTY" Keyboard) you can still use your god dam! phone! Rant over! (For Now!).

While the number of keyboards are starting to get crazy, your keyboard idea is a niche idea. Also quite often a crack screen doesnt affect the touch part, it just hurts your fingers. Solution? Don't drop it.

I've found the wide angle lens option quite nice over having to do the finicky panoramic picture, and you can't stick a wide angle lens on top of the normal one. You either have to have swappable lenses (modularity isn't something people are interested in and it just means another piece for people to lose) or two cameras.

Which would be nice, but it's not for everyone.

After having five Android phones, two Android tablets, an iPad, and for a little bit, an iPhone, I don't see how they're getting "too hard to use." None of them have done something like what Microsoft did with Windows 8.

Also few people care about physical keyboards. If it was really a thing, the holdouts from the early 2010s would've won out. The only thing a physical keyboard would provide is haptic feedback and even then, we're so used to a lack of it that it probably doesn't matter anymore. Not to mention physical keyboards are annoyingly small to work with unless you go to Galaxy Note or iPhone X sizes.

And in a lot cases of a cracked screen, the touch interface still works. Besides that, considering the primary method of navigating UI in most smartphones is by touch, it would be annoying to use a physical keyboard because the UX wasn't designed for physical keyboards.

Like take away your mouse, then use your computer.

I think you're in a rather small minority. Bezel-less is the future and many people do want it. And if you want a larger sensor, just buy a regular camera.

A regular camera? that's not very future like, is it?

Yearh but the touch screen keyboard doesn't work as well.

Fine, you can be part of the very small and very vocal minority of people who want physical keyboards and probably own a Blackberry. I would rather have a larger screen and I prefer the swipe keyboard style.

Physical keyboards and huge bezels aren't very future like either...

I don't get your rant at all. If anything, phones are becoming more and more useful. The cameras have improved considerably over the past few years, as it's now one of the only characteristics that separates devices. Dual cameras are hugely advantageous, and give a lot more flexibility. Wide angle, depth sensors, better low light, etc etc. Lots of people give a fuck about bezelless displayed. I do. I'd rather have a much larger screen in as small of a body as possible. Slide out keyboards suck. Very few phones, if any, do them well. It's always a point of failure that wears out way too quickly. If you're worried about damaging a screen, you should hate the idea of a slider. If you're after flip phones, maybe you're just not into smartphones?

Haptic feedback isn't the only thing that pkbs have going for them. It's just easier to use without looking at what you're doing with your thumbs. I can type out an email much more rapidly with fewer errors on a pkb. You can assign shortcuts to virtually every button on a pkb, making it extremely easy to navigate the UI. Almost easier then having to swipe through pages or folders for apps. It's a niche market for sure, but it definitely has it's place.

Large sensors are possible, it just requires a larger phone. Personally I'd love to see Panasonic come out with an updated camera phone. With advancements we've seen they could make it pretty compact. Smaller market, sure, but one nonetheless.
