Voltage locked to 1.250v on HD 7950 windforce 3 v2

hi everyone,

 

i have a windforce hd 7950 v2 (the one with the vrm backplate).

i can run it at full overclock and will only hit 72ish C.

my problem is that at 1190mhz i start to get artifacts, this is caused by my vCore being to low.

are there ways to raise the vCore above 1.25?

artifacts? This is 99% of the time caused by unstable or loose solder on the VRAM chips. Overdoing the core clock just crashes the app or even the system.

if i run it at 1200mhz it crashes

and at 1195 there are artifacts

It seems to be locked at 1250/1256

Yeah as you said, it's too low Vcore for the GPU clock. In MSI Afterburner the voltage adjustment is locked? You could also try with VRMTool to see, if the voltage can be adjusted at all... Not sure about the voltage controller on the card though.

If memory serves, for the 7900 series cards, Gigabyte has limited the GPU Core Voltage to under 1.20V within the vBIOS. The only way to get around that would be to flash another card's vBIOS onto it.

 

You shouldn't be just cranking the voltage up from ~1.190V up to 1.250V; this is how you kill GPUs.

I am running stable at 1,256v, what do you mean by killing the gpu? Temperature wise or because of voltage spikes or something?

Every GPU will react to voltage increase differently, even between on HD 7950 to another.

 

If you are just going blind, and increasing the voltage to a random value, and it happens to be too much for your specific GPU, it can get damaged.

 

With overclocking, you are trying to find the voltage needed for your frequency...not the other way around.

 

Too much voltage and too high temperature are what kills / damage hardware.

If you have a Dual-Bios, gather a few different bios's and flash upon your #2 Bios (or #1 if you prefer #2 or it has benefits over #1)

Research the many HD7000 HD7950 "Owners Club" forums out there, there would be many sources of great information on the best solution for "most users" and also advanced options to try if your that keen.

I am currently running an HD 7970 bios, it has higher base clocks and gives me 6mvolt more, but my temps are still so low, I just hate that I haven't unlocked the full potential
