Is there a way to reset the deadzone on a Xbox One Controller?

Random Ware

I'm have a Xbox One controller that has a dead zone issue. The right stick is fully centered but it moves upward regardless of me not having my finger on the stick. 100% sure it's a deadzone issue and not something broken inside.

Had this issue with my limited edition Titanfall controller and I tried to find a solution and in the end I just bought a new one.

I imagine Microsoft could give us something to fix it but they obviously would rather want us to buy a new controller.

That's what Warranty is for. Why not use it?

I originally got the controller from a friend and I doubt the warranty is still good on it.

Depends on when your friend bought the controller, try your luck and check if it can be replaced.

I believe, because the controller is a Microsoft product, you only get 1 year of warranty on it.

Anyways, what you could do it take apart the controller* and use some compressed air to get rid of some dusts in the analog sticks, that may resolve the issue. Coincidentally I watched some videos on this and that seemed to fix the issue for them. It is also recommend to switch around the analog 'caps' (the rubber things that you game on) because usually one has more wear than the other.

*taking apart an Xbox one controller is certainly not difficult, just made more annoying by how it is done.

You first take off the two pieces of plastic on either grip of the controller. You can do this with a whole range of items, but you want to do it with something with a flat end and which is sturdy; usually people do this with a butter knife of similar. You clip off those back pieces, unscrew two screws (a certain Torx) on either side.

After that, there is another screw located below the sticker in the battery compartment; obviously breaking this sticker will void any warranty, if applicable.

Once you have done that, you'r inside the controller and can do the maintenance on the control sticks.

But as others said, check if you can do anything with the warranty, if you can't; taking it apart is a valid option. Be sure to watch a video or read the ifixit guide for how to do this and attempt this at your own risk.
