Did I kill one of my GPU's?

Tristerin

In my old gaming rig I have 2 HD 7850's in crossfire via ribbon cable.  During gameplay got mad artifacts (competitive gameplay) and thought, I know I shouldn't do this but lets see if it clears up the issue so I don't have to drop game - I opened the case, popped the ribbon off the bottom card while the PC was on and engaged.  Didn't hear a noise, or anything but also didn't clear up artifacts so I had to hard drop anyways.

Crashed my PC bring it back up, get in game and continue...before I head to bed I checked MSI afterburner and GPU #2 is now showing 20% fan spin...no temps, MHz etc being displayed, only fan spin - plugged my main monitor into the HDMI output of this GPU and did not bring up a screen.  Didn't have time to unseat GPU and test but will tonight...so preparing for the worst, did I really fubar and trash this GPU based off what I noticed before I had to go?  Or can I get lucky and hopefully reseat this thing and it will work again lol

How bad is it doc!?!

Oh my, you dont unplug hardware like that while running man.
I don't know if it break from it, but the risk would say to not even try...

There are no shortcuts.
I would pull both graphics cards out and try them one at a time to see.

When i ask for more specs, don't expect me to know the answer!
I'm just helping YOU to help YOURSELF!
(The more info you give the easier it is for others to help you out!)

artifacts on the screen usually mean a gpu faillure...

Artifacts are caused from Crossfire - known issue and something I experience far to often when in Crossfire (at least in this case this is what is happening for sure)

I KNEW this but, I am also dumb.

GPU 1 - still running just fine, no artifacts no issues, fully recognized, OC'able still etc after pulling ribbon during gameplay

GPU 2 - showing only fan spin in MSI afterburner, and I did try to increase fan spin to 100% to see if I got a response last night...and I didn't (at least I didn't hear it spool up like I usually can)

this might sound like a basic step you could have done already, but put in the faulty card and update his drivers. it might just help becouse i've read about a driver cousing that 20% fan speed

Im not sure how that could happen, this is an older style crossfire with a ribbon cable independent of the slot - I would think if a pin on the ribbon cable or Crossfire port were messed up that would disallow Xfire since the connection wasn't being made - but Ill take a look!

Going to be trying all the things tonight looking for ideas thank you!!!  I basically re-attached ribbon cable after shut down last night, booted up, GPU-Z showing they are still crossfired however MSI afterburner showing NOTHING going on with the GPU and couldn't even spool fans higher.  So I plan on taking it out and trying GPU2 in slot 1 position etc just seeing if maybe there was a definitive response or not, sounds like its a maybe till I tinker with it!

Reseated it in the slot, reconnected 6 pin, turned it on, fans didn't stop spinning so I moved the HDMI cable to second GPU...and monitor turned on...

So Im typing from my second GPU...GOT LUCKY!  Going to shut down and put the crossfire bridge back on and see

Disconnecting the Crossfire ribbon cable while the system is still on was a mistake.

You can risk damaging the cards since there is still power going through the cables.

The Crossfire Bridge allows the two cards to communicate with each other.

When in Crossfire, the second card's output displays WILL NOT WORK.

Only the display outputs on the primary card (e.g. top card) functions.

If you disable Crossfire, the two cards will operate independently from each other.

When in Crossfire, and the system is idle / light workloads in Windows, the second card will be disabled / put into a lower-power hibernate state.

Readings from the second GPU (e.g. frequency, voltage, etc) might not get picked up by MSi Afterburner, GPU-Z, etc -- not until it is out of this lower-power mode.

In some situations, the fans are completely turned off.

Just from some experience with running ATi/AMD Crossfire over the years...

Im not going to say I was under any influences that gave me poor judgement...cause I was LOL

So I put the bridge back on, and it wouldn't xfire, nor would the second GPU show ANYTHING other than 20% fan speed again.  (usually it would display 300mhz clock etc in Afterburner at minimum when not in use) so I took the ribbon cable off and its a working GPU..I stupidly (and luckily) borked the Crossfire bridge...it was hard to find one sans waiting for a month from China, guess Ill order another!!!

Have you tried running Crossfire with the GPUs swapped (e.g. second GPU in the top slot, first in the bottom slot)?

I guess fingers crossed that the Crossfire ribbon cable is roasted...and not the Crossfire connection / hardware on the video card(s) that are fried.

You can usually find Crossfire cables at local PC stores, or even local classifieds.

They go for like $1 ~ $5 each (or free).

Good luck!

I have not tried swapping them, will do that 100% (not sure if time tonight but by tomorrow night I will and will update)

Good point on the cards connection/hardware, fortunately they are at the end of a lifecycle I am trying to eek out as long as possible if that is the case, and I will be getting another bridge to find out - hoping to eek that lifecycle!

The reason I thought maybe it was just the cable was that it showed Crossfire in GPU-Z still, but completely shut down the card.  Shut down, remove ribbon, Crossfire Disabled per GPU-Z but second GPU working as it should (trying to put more info out to you learned folks!)

Try Ddu drivers and reinstall?

Will be doing that this weekend (hectic work week due to quarter end financials) if none of the above work - thank you for that!
