I have a strix GTX 1080 with a i5 6600 on a z170a motherboard with 4 sticks of ram for a total of 16gb at 2133Mhz. I feel that my 1080 is getting bottlenecks by my i5 and is looking for a good cpu upgrade within reasonable price. I found a bundle with r7 1800x B350 and corsair H60 for 4280 sek or 473 USD. Since I already have a z170 I'm thinking about buying a i7700k instead for 3090 sek or 344 USD. I play most games but mainly PUBG. Which is better for my situation? My budget is around 550 USD.

What monitor resolution/refresh rate? You CPU should should be alright for 60hz gaming, just hope you don't have just a 1080p 60hz display...

That ryzen bundle sounds pretty good.

an i7 7700K would be a waste, only a 4 core 8 thread CPU for way too high of a price, those are worth under $200 USD now.

your best option is just waiting and saving your money. the 7700k is not worth 3000 SEK. if you find a good deal used then maybe pick it up, but otherwise just save your money. id suggest waiting a year untill doing a CPU upgrade as new products are coming soon and next year is a very promising hardware year

What you think it should be worth and what they are actually going for used are two different things. Trust me, we know you don't like Intel.

However yeah, I wouldn't bother. Maybe in a year or two you could get a 7700K as a stop gap so you can hold onto the system for another 2 years after that so you don't have to do a full rebuild. But until that point I'd just chill with what you have

the only issue is that at this point in time the 7700k is pretty much pointless, especially if you have a 6600. yes it can be a stopgap, but unless you are paying less than 150$ the CPU (today) you are much better of saving for a new plattform.

a 6 core 12 thread is 160$ today and a 6core 6thread sub 200$

and don't forget the cost of the board, so +$100. He said he has a Z170 motherboard already. So he doesn't have to buy a new board in order to overclock. He would if he switches to Ryzen, which then defeats the purpose of switching.

a good B350 board is about 60$.

like the 7700k is fine-ish if you buy it used, but from an 6600 you are better of saving the cash. games are becoming multithreaded, and it would be a waste to buy a CPU on its way out.

I don't know if any $60 motherboard can be called good... but I understand your point. Games are getting to multithreaded, but that depends more on what version of DirectX they use. I can name a few that still use DX9, let alone 11 or 12. I still think OP should wait for the 9000 series just to see where it goes and how it affects other generations pricing.

I got a brand new, highly rated B350 board last year for only 70USD on Newegg, so yes, it's definitely possible.

the PRO4 boards are decent. like they arent magic but they are rather good for the price.

wait for 9000 series (seems like a sad coffeelake refresh + 2 cores) or Ryzen 3000. which is kinda why waiting untill next year is good, because it is going to be an amazing hardware year

The prices for used i7 is around retail here

Then maybe just look for an R5 1600 or 2600 with an ASrock Pro 4 B450 or MSI Tomahawk B450 board, at least over here it would cost the same or less than a retail i7

There is a bundle of a r7 1800x plus Asus b350 and a corsair h60 for 4248 sek. The only thing is that I only have 2133Mhz ram and I have seen that ryzen gen 1 favours ram speed over clock speed

clock speed is always going to be the most important thing.

good RAM can help ryzen, but it's fine without it, you could always replace the ram with a 16GB 3200mhz kit in the future anyways once prices drop.

That ryzen combo sounds solid.
