Which should be paired with a Gtx 1060 6gb?

I am deciding whether or not to buy a i5 8400 with a my Gtx 1060 or an i5 8600k.

I want to chose the 8600k because it’s overclockable for the future and is generally faster. But I’ve also heard that your cpu should be nearly 1/2 price of the gpu (the Gtx 1060 is $300 and the 8600k is $270!).

From where?

Ryzen 5 1600 @ 3.9 Ghz  | Gigabyte AB350M Gaming 3 |  PaliT GTX 1050Ti  |  8gb Kingston HyperX Fury @ 2933 Mhz  |  Corsair CX550m  |  1 TB WD Blue HDD

Inside some old case I found lying around.

Umm who said that your cpu must be half the price of your gpu?

As a general rule pick a faster cpu as long as it does not mean sacrificing a more powerful gpu.

Now, the difference between the 8400 and the 8600k will be minimal under most games but this is mostly dependent on the games you are playing. For example in a game like cs-go you will be more than likely cpu limited due to the high fps whereas in a more graphically demanding game such as PUBG you will probably be gpu limited. Keep in mind that if you go the 8600k route you will need to spend more on a z-370 motherboard.

Interested in computer architecture? Still in middle or high school? P.M. me!

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

either of them would be way more than fine for a GTX 1060, it depends if you want the overclocking ability or not.

Personally, if you're not too worried about the price difference between the "k" variant CPU plus a Z370 MOBO then I'd go with the 8600k. The "k" variants tend to hold their value better plus you can OC.

CPU: Intel Core i7 8700k 3.7Ghz MOBO: AsRock Z370 Extreme4

RAM: Corsair Vengeance (4x4) Storage: Crucial MX300 275Gb | WD Blue 1Tb

GPU: XFX RS RX480 8Gb Case: Corsair 270R PSU: Seasonic Focus+ 750w

Monitors: HP 22cwa | BenQ BL2420PT  Cans: ATH-M50x

Overclocking is why they hold their value better, as they are able to keep up with more demanding workloads by using higher speed to compensate for being older.

ok thanks, I’m already getting a z370 motherboard so I might as well get the 8600k for future over clocking.

Right, they go hand in hand. Good point. Suggestions still stands, go with the 8600k OP :)
