If only gaming, yes.

Ryzen 5 1600 @ 3.9 Ghz  | Gigabyte AB350M Gaming 3 |  PaliT GTX 1050Ti  |  8gb Kingston HyperX Fury @ 2933 Mhz  |  Corsair CX550m  |  1 TB WD Blue HDD

Inside some old case I found lying around.

Neither. Best gaming CPU is IDT Winchip, obviously.

intel for gaming, but i think 8400 might be one of the exceptions, as it is locked without hyperthreading, so a 2600 can easily beat it

The 8400 is no exception.

But since the difference is honestly not huge i'd go with what costs less (which most likely is the 8400 again).

Or, to be more precise.

If you save a nice amount of money by getting the 8400 and you don't care that much about future upgrades then go for the 8400.

If you get a comparable ryzen system for a similar amount and/or you value future upgrades more (since you should be able to upgrade at least to ryzen 3 with the same setup), then go ryzen.
