There have been rumors that turning on ray tracing tanks performance, even on a RTX 2080 Ti.

 

Whether this is the case or not (reviews will be out in the next two weeks), would it be possible to have quality settings in the game menus? (low, medium, high etc.)

 

Or is it a type of technology that's either on or off?

Ray tracing works by rendering individual rays of light and tracing where they go and how they act with different materials (hence the name ray tracing). I guess the quality of the light could be adjusted to the number of rays being rendered and traced. That's just my theory anyway :)

I would hope so. That way, if the card struggles to do ray tracing at 1440p/60, you could drop the quality setting and battle on.

I also understand ray tracing to as being used to detect objects along a path. Like fire a bullet and see what it hits type thing. Used it with Unity. So I would say you can't turn it off if the developer has designed an app that uses it.

Yeah the number of rays and reflections can typically be adjusted.

yes that's exactly how it works...by limiting the amount of rays you speed up the rendering time...that's how nvidia achieve real time ray tracing is by shooting less ray than what would be ideal, this makes a noisy image and they use Ai to de-noise the image and get something that looks nice at a lower cost.

I really hope you can adjust the amount since I'm thinking about getting a RTX 2070 for 1440p and I would like to run raytracing in BF5 with stable 60FPS but I don't think that will be nowhere close to 60FPS with full raytracing so I hope I can have just a little raytracing to be able to get stable 60FPS :)
