Combined ethernet for >1Gbps?

Hey there fellow Canadians (and non-Canadians too).

I just switched my Bell Fibe plan to 1.5Gbps and I'm loving it, but I've got a simple question before I (hope) to take full advantage of the speeds.

Seeing as the modem doesn't have 10Gbe, would it be possible to just use dual-gigabit Ethernet connections straight to the modem to reach >1gbps speeds on my main desktop? Or does traffic not split well like that?

 

Either way, I got it on promo for $90/month and it ended up cheaper than their 500mbps package offer was. No raise after 6 months either so I'll keep it, just hoping I can push myself past the 1gbps mark with a cheapo dual ethernet adapter such as this!

You would need to do some configuration for it, but it is possible. Here is a guide that can point you in the right direction.

Steps in the link are for Windows Server, will the same steps apply in Win 10 Pro?

I would think you should be able to do it.

NIC teaming is supposed to be a feature of server OS only, but you can enable it in Windows 10 via powershell

Link aggregation works only to get you more speed to multiple locations (some combination of MAC, IP, and Port is used depending on the hashing algo you use) and not over a single connection end to end. There are some services which bond internet connections into a single connection but nothing that I've ever seen that does so for LAN connections excluding MAYBE SMBv3 but I don't think that's fully implemented on anything.

Even if we ignore the above and assume that you can use multiple 1Gbit links to get more than 1Gbit to a single location, OP will need two links all the way from the computer to the router which will cut down on ports and if he wants to add a switch and get more than gigabit on multiple machines then you get into the whole issue of finding switches that do LACP, the need for multiple links everywhere, etc. and if he goes with a 10Gbit switch then they'll have to burn two ports on that to link to the Hub 3000 since, best I can find, it only has 1Gbit ports on it aside from the fiber link.

I'm only looking to get >gig speeds on my main desktop so I can take full advantage of those speeds, everything else in my house is fine on <gig. 

I only have 3 LAN devices (My DT, GF DT, laptop in the room for in-home streaming) so sacrificing my last port isn't the end of the world, I've also got an 8-port Gigabit switch on standby for if I ever need the extra ports that I'll just put between my modem and GFs PC if it ever comes to it. 

 

I was lucky enough to have the modem installed where my desk is so running a 2nd cable won't be an issue.
