500€ GPUless build for my wife

Hello LTT Community,

It is me! A random citizen from the world. I have come with a brain full of dreams and a heart caring for my tender significant other. I may not have the biggest of the budget, but I want to build her a better computer (as for me? Don't mind me... I have an old laptop which does great pixelated games at a toasty 87C°).

Here is what I want: a cheap system which can handle some games (720p / 1080p) in low or medium quality. Those games aren't recent or very demanding (examples: Armello, Endless Legend, Stardew Valley... with hope of playing games like Divinity Original Sin 2 and Phantom Doctrine in low quality). And on the side, a healthy dose of photo editing, coding and small (very small) video editing.

I have a budget of 500€ for the computer (not including mouse / keyboard / screen in the price). I am living in France and I don't want to buy suspicious, too pricey, "barely used" components or computers you can find on Ebay or Leboncoin (French Craigslist).

Therefore, I was thinking about a build like this (excuse me if I am not detailed, I am here asking for help):

ATX size MOBO
Ryzen 2400G
2x4 Go 3200MHz DDR4 Ram
128 Go SSD
1 To HD
??? Power supply
NZXT Source 340 in white (otherwise it's not beautiful) for the case (but I am open for suggestion)

Why no GPU? Because cheap

At one point I thought about a Pentium G4560 with a cheap graphic card but what do you think of this?

I would rather an old i5 or i7 Haswell Dell, then place the parts inside a case of your choice and add a GPU. Something like a 1050Ti is good. It can be found cheaply used.

That could be interesting to do.

I only find weird 90€ "Never used" "Without brands" on french ebay or at 150€ branded and used... which is nearly the price for a new one.

I'd stay away from eBay. Look towards Facebook marketplace. I have seen some great deals there.

If building for the Wife... Choose an old possibly faulty Dell, or a custom built nice PC case Ryzen system?

I know which one I'd go for!!! :D

If you see a personal add (local adds Facebook, Shpock etc), then you could go see the hardware. I've had good results from Shpock, as I turn up see the person is a DJ upgrading his old setup, Young Dad/Father upgrading his gaming PC, and the actual hardware is good. Got a 1050ti, though not an amazing deal, had a few quid off, and was almost new because "I got it at christmas, now got my bonus and got a 1080 instead". xD

Though I did have 1 person sell me a dud (manufacturer defect) SSD. :(

Question: Isn't Ryzen better at handling dual channel ram? And wasn't there a problem with "low" MHz ram at one point or was it patched through the bios of the MOBOs?

I see it's a 2200G, I will have to compare it with the 2400G :)

Well...in case of ryzen...

The faster the ram...the better fps u get in games...

Also...dual channel ram incerases it's performance....I myself have been tested that.

So....if u r going fr ryzen apus....then opt for faster dual channel memory..
