Hi guys, long time lurker first time poster. Recently my PC has experienced random crashes and boot failures, after a major cleaning session I got my PC to boot but during the clean I came across this (see pic) on the PSU circuit board.

Is it time for a new one and should I risk using my PC until I get a new one?

Thanks in advance.

pretty sure that's just glue or smth, but don't touch those capacitors if you value your life. you can end up dead or hospitalized from being shocked by it.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X Heatsink: Gelid Phantom Black GPU: Palit RTX 3060 Ti Dual RAM: Corsair DDR4 2x8GB 3000Mhz mobo: Asus X570-P case: Fractal Design Define C PSU: Superflower Leadex Gold 650W

You should never open a power supply unless qualified to do so. There is a serious risk of injury or death as the capacitors inside the unit can store a charge even when the unit is turned off and unplugged. There are no user serviceable parts inside a PSU. You have also most likely voided any warranty that the unit may have had on it.

What model PSU is it?

CPU: Intel i7 6700k  | Motherboard: Gigabyte Z170x Gaming 5 | RAM: 2x16GB 3000MHz Corsair Vengeance LPX | GPU: Gigabyte Aorus GTX 1080ti | PSU: Corsair RM750x (2018) | Case: BeQuiet SilentBase 800 | Cooler: Arctic Freezer 34 eSports | SSD: Samsung 970 Evo 500GB + Samsung 840 500GB + Crucial MX500 2TB | Monitor: Acer Predator XB271HU + Samsung BX2450

It's a HIT 700 watt, I think the warranty experied about about 5 years ago.

You should most definitely replace it. I would advise against continuing to use it.

If you post what the rest of your system is (CPU + GPU mainly) we can recommend a new PSU for you.

You should never have used this PSU in the first place.

- ancient design

- no PFC

- certainly group regulated

- plain half bridge topology

- two small capacitors seem to be bloated

- horrible burn mark near the resistors

This is exactly the kind of PSU that can do significant damage to itself as well as all other parts in the PC.

Thanks guys, I was looking at a Kolink 500 watt 80 bronze PSU for £30 or should I spend more?

The PSU came with my old case and honestly never given it a thought until recently.

What's the point of replacing a crappy PSU with another crappy PSU? What are you powering?

:)

If THAT is your PSU, get a new one and DO NO USE IT.

As its a 20 year old design and must not be used.

What are your options?

Options are open, I will be having a major overhaul after Xmas so a future proof PSU would be great.

PSUs are confusing now a days, I was looking at the Kolink but it appears to be as bad as my previous one.

Ebuyer has a few cosair ones I was looking at but I'm open to suggestions.

What Corsair ones? If it's a TXM then you'd be set for 10 years with that unit. Same goes for an RMx or RMi.

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.
