So I got a new computer about a month ago and I got some help from a friend of mine that has some experience to overclock it, I got a stable overclock on my i5-8600k @4.8GHz but only at 1.300Voltage, (at 5Ghz I get bluescreens at any voltage up to 1.400V) my friend proceeded to tell me 1.300Volt is a lot and that he would not want his cpu to be running at a voltage that high, so I would want to ask any of you if this is dangerous, could I maybe fry my cpu ? Or does it shorten my cpu's lifespan ? Any replies are helpful.

As long as you're below 1.4V, it's fine. I can't comment on lifespan since I have only had my 8600K for just under four months, and I've ran mine from anywhere between 1.15V to 1.35V within its time, with overclocks of 4.4GHz to 5GHz respectively.

The danger in high voltage is high temperatures, which can negatively affect the CPU's performance more than anything.

1.35 has been fine for me, 1.4 is the upper limit for me.

I can prob do 5.5GHZ at 1.4, but i'm GPU throttled even when i use stock speeds, the overclock is just for fun.

at 1.4, when the CPU dies, its going to be useless as everything else is so much better. I have a friend with a heavily overclocked FX-8350, and its still going strong a 5 years old.

What are your temps when overclocking?

That motherboard appears to be horribly overpriced for the 4 phase VRM it offers, that's probably part of your issue.

Your case has low airflow leading to higher temps, your cooler is rather low end for overclocking, and you're at a 15-20C dedicate due to elmer's glue TIM without delidding.

Did you post on this forum before buying the PC? Someone should have caught those issues.

and I hope you have something better than just a 1080p 60hz display

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

I did not post on this forum before, I did ask on reddit before buying my pc, I now realise I went with a kind of stupid motherboard but it works fine, my cpu temperature never goes over 70°C (on full load after half an hour) so I think the cooler is just fine for overclocking, I might look into delidding in the future to get better temps, also I do have a 144hz 1080p display from AOC. Thanks for the comment

My cpu doesn't go over 70°C when on full load after a couple runs of CineBench so I don't think the temperatures are that high, also I do not play that many cpu intensive games so when I'm gaming it doesn't go over 60°C. Thanks for the comment

personally i would be totally fine with up to 1.42V if you're delidded and your temps stay below 70C

saying 1.4V is dangerous isn't true, this depends on what temps you're running with that kind of voltage.

1.3V at 4.8 in your case i bet that cooler is being pushed pretty hard and i wouldn't go much higher.

if you can't reach 5GHz with 1.4V you lost the silicon lottery big time and i would just stick with the settings you have right now.

I've had my i5-8600k up to 1.45V trying to get a stable 5.2GHz. Whether it's dangerous really just depends on your CPU temperatures under load. I just delidded mine yesterday and applied some Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut. It's been handling the temps very nicely with my be quiet Dark Rock 3 since. I've had a temperature drop of about 22°C running benches on a 4.8GHz OC.

Personally I wouldn't go any further than that, though. Not an expert on the matter by any means, but I've heard around the 1.5+V area you're running the risk of frying your CPU upon system startup.

I'm wondering though...
I'm also using the msi Z370-A Pro with an i5-8600k and I'm currently running it on a fixed 5GHz, Adaptive Mode, LLC Mode 4, C-State disabled, and even though my temps are perfectly fine (62°C max), only moments after launching Prime95 my CPU will throttle to an abysmal 2.1 to 2.2GHz and remain there. All my benchmark results also got significantly worse compared to my 4.8GHz OC and I can't find the reason for this behaviour. I haven't opened any thread about it yet, but I'm considering it.
Do you have any issues of that sort as well?

I've never ran a stress test like Prime95 or something like that so I wouldn't know but I have almost never had issues with throttling.

At higher voltage the currents alone can degrade a cpu regardless of temperature, but the 8600k hasn't been out long enough yet so alot of it is just an educated guess at best.

I personally don't go above 1.4v with my chips.
