samsung 970 pro not running at full speed

Kirikoo

Hi everyone,

Hope i get some help here i'm desperate, i bought an asus Zenbook 3 deluxe Ux490UA 2017 version with 7th gen Core i7-7500U, 8G DDR3 Ram and a 256g Sata 3 M2 SSD (with PCIe gen 3 X 4 capability)

I upgraded the SSD to a samsung 970 Pro 512G nvme, but the speed is not as advertised.

The speed is at max 1800mbps read and write on crystalmark/samsung magician, but everyone testing it gets 3500ish read and 2700ish write (as advertised btw)

the samsung magician software shows that its functioning at PCIe gen 3 X 4.

I'm wondering, is there some kind of limitation on my pcie on my laptop? why is the speed less than others'? i also tested it on my work laptop which is a HP ZBOOK 15 mobile workstation with Core I7 6820HQ 64g DDR4 ram and on that one it's really at full 3500/2700 mbps with same PCIe capabilities

XMP overclocking profile active is probably the issue. turn it off and manually enter the values in the bios/uefi

Oh the website they advertise it can run at up to 1845MB/s with a PCIe ssd, so it's probably some limitation in the laptop. Though if it's at 4x it should be able to go higher.

@Kirikoo

also check this

PCIe 2.0 x4 slot is 2GB/second, while a 3.0 x4 slot would be 4GB/second

is there another PCIe M.2 slot you can put it into? some are only PCIe 2.0 and to get the 3000+ MB/ps you need it in a 3.0 M.2 port. The Samsung Magician software only reliable tells you that the cards can work at PCIe gen 3 (3.0 x 4) not that it is connected to such a port. It also reports the speed wrong on a lot of systems so run Crystalmark

@STRESSMASTER

No there is only 1 pcie slot in my laptop.

I also tested the card on a laptop with PCIE 2 X 4 and it showed me that the ssd is functioning at 2.0 speed. so i think that samsung magician shows the real speed of the ssd depending on where it's connected.

And no doubt about that my laptop has a slot with PCIe 3 X 4

@RKRiley

yeah the benchmark on my laptop is at 1800mb/s if i buy the version with a nvme ssd, maybe the oem nvme into it has max speed of 1800

But like you said if its fitted with a PCIe 3 X 4 it should be able to achieve such speed
