What happens when the CPU becomes too hot?

The pc will shut down to avoid damage.

What kind of a cooling solution are you using stock, aftermarket, liquid.

If your running stock might have to suggest getting a aftermarket cooler like a Cryorig or Noctua for better thermals.

You can also adjust the fan speed for your CPU in the bios to cool it quicker at certain temps.

In the event that all failsafes fail, if the CPU gets hot enough, it'll enter a thermal runaway state. Semiconductors have a weird property where if they get too hot, their electrical resistance decreases, allowing more amperage, which increases the heat even more (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermal_runaway#Semiconductors)

Basically at that point the CPU cooks itself to death.

Wouldn't worry though, even the drastically STOCK Intel Cooler can manage an i5 8400 (in most environments bar a deserted desert)

But in due time, it'll still get quite warm, likely not enough to throttle clocks or shutdown.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz
