Is 80c for stock 8700k under 100% load normal?

I just built my first PC, and I am pleased to say it all turned out great!

 

However, there is one thing that concerns me.

The CPU has a Coolermaster 212 EVO, and idles around 40c.

When gaming, the CPU stays pretty cool as well. My concern is when I am using UE4, the temperature of the CPU get's up to 80c.

 

When using UE4, my CPU load is 100%. Even at full load, should it be getting so hot?

Sounds like bad thermal application possibly? Which method did you use, pea size, rice size, and did you spread it or did you let the cooler spread it?

The chip runs hot. 80c is fine.

Supposedly the cooler is rated for 150W TDP. Though I'd expect under load the processor should be dumping much higher heat than what it's rated for, but still well under what the cooler can supposedly do.

 

I'd suspect a spotty thermal paste application or a fan curve that isn't aggressive enough first.

I was just wondering the same thing myself earlier today, but it seems the general consensus is that 80C is fine for 8700k. A little high, but as long as temps don't go higher than that, it's acceptable.

The 212 isn't bad for its price range but it is no top end cooler. I don't know what kind of load UE4 puts on CPUs, but certainly I'd expect 80C+ if running Prime95 for example. If not overclocked, 80C is ok. Lower is preferred but I wouldn't overly worry about it. Also check the case it is in has adequate airflow.

80 is about what I'd expect to until delid and upgrade from basically stock cooler.

The 212 Evo isn't the best cooler out there, but certainly miles ahead of the stock Intel cooler. Either way, 80c seems fine and not much to worry about.
