R9 280 seems to be toast, I have £60, what to get used?

CookiezFort

CEX is selling R9 270X's for £50 which is as I understand pretty reasonable.

Anything second hand on ebay is like £80 or above which imho is quite expensive for those type of cards.

Is there any other option? I don't want to spend too much since my Mobo also seems to dying (no gpu outputs anything from the top PCI-E x16 slot, so I can only use the second slot on my mobo, which incidently isin't even x16 2.0 slot, its a x4 2.0 slot).

Anything else at that price would under perform the R9 270X, so I'd say go for it. It's not much slower than your old 280. And I recommend checking the CPU socket to make sure there are no bent pins or anything covering them-I had similar issues caused by bent pins on my H87 board.

Thats what I've been thinking aswell.

I might try and find anything in /r/hardwareswapUK for z97 mobos aswell at some point. Really annoying that things have just started failing now.

You're complaining about that yet I'm sat here with no GPU and a half dead mobo (PCIe fried by a GTX 950 SC). Go with the 270X's and do tell me what's wrong with your board.

If Z97 boards are out of your budget, you could always get a H97 motherboard. Mine does allow me to overclock my 4790K via its multiplier, but it has a voltage limit (unlike my Asus H87M Pro board-that was able to run my 4790K at 4.8GHz without issues)

Until recently I was using a Z97 Sabertooth MKII that had these fail suddenly:

  • 2x RAM slots (it was stuck with 8GB DDR3 1333 single channel)
  • the onboard audio
  • the BIOS (regardless of battery it couldn't keep settings)
  • all the PCIe slots running from the PCH

I feel you, I've borrowed a gpu from a friend for now, atleast your stuff is new enough to go under warranty.

not really, the 950 was second hand and I'm on an fx 6300 based system currently. The rig you see first in my sig is my dream rig, but there's no way I'll be getting that anytime soon. What's wrong with your board anyway?

God knows. Neither the HD7770 or the R9 280 output anything when on the top slot, (they do power up though). The R9 280 seems to be pretty dead, but on the second slot pc boots up and I can get into windows, but when I even attempt to run MSI kombustor (or any game) it crashes showing stupid very faint coloured vertical lines, theres no artifacting or anything prior, it just dies and the sound starts lagging and repeating best way to describe is jsut hearing a brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

The bios actually went south on my secondary rig (The Oldie) quite recently. But what you just said failed sounds even more painful than what I have with my current rig (Black Magic).

The experience you're getting on the first slot sounds exactly like what I'm going through with my only x16 slot on my M5A78L-M /USB3. GPU's power up (HD 5450 and HD 7470) but no video output. Both have been previously tested on my secondary rig (The Oldie) prior to its' bios failing and not saying settings.

At least it wasn't my 4790K or 970-those I couldn't have replaced. As it happens the PSU was causing everything (apart from the RAM slots) to start breaking.

That sounds like a PSU issue. My VS650 used to do the same with my GTX 970 and GTX650ti. Replacing it made the problems go away.

I have no real way of checking what is at fault though.

the 7770 works fine on the second slot. Why could the power supply be the issue though? What fault could it have to cause that?

That's what my VS650 was causing-it was having troubles powering anything via its PCIe cable.

Its kind of weird because on the 500B the two pci-e cables seem to branch off from each other, and come from 1 main 'lead'. So surely my HD7770 would not work with either cable.

Or it doesn;t draw enough power to the point the PSU can't handle it.

Go for the 270X's.

Why would you downgrade your GPU?

The R9 280 might be dying.

Its kind of weird because on the 500B the two pci-e cables seem to branch off from each other, and come from 1 main 'lead'. So surely my HD7770 would not work with either cable.

Or it doesn;t draw enough power to the point the PSU can't handle it. as an edit. Here is the video of roughly what happens. All the fans keep working as if nothing happened

Problem also seems to be that after 1 or 2 crashes I get no output again. So it might also be a heat issue (although at the time of that recording and crash gpu-z was noting like 60 degrees for the temperature). Because I hadn't tried the gpu for about a month and before it was doing nothing, while now I tried it today and it booted onto windows with it.
