1080Ti, 4K and 2600K?

daphatgrant
Hey LTT, looking for some advice. My gpu died so I'm in the market for a replacement but I've got a couple things to consider.

First, I've got an older system with a 2600K, P8Z68 and 16GB ram which I have OC'd to 4.4GHZ. I'm looking at a 1080ti and a 4K TV to replace my non-existent gpu and old, old 26" monitor. I'm wondering if I will have any excessive bottlenecking issues with my current i7 setup @ 4K? HardwareCanucks made a video comparing the 8700K to the 2600K with a 1080Ti and had acceptable performance out of the 2600K. Their testing focused on 1080 and 1440 but didn't test 4K performance which is what I'm looking at.

Second, I don't think I can get this answered, but, I wonder if waiting for an 1180 and getting that would create too much of a bottleneck?

I know going into this that I'm not going to be able to crank every setting to high and I'm good with that. I've been extremely happy with my trusty old 2600K setup and want to squeeze a little more life out of it before doing a full upgrade. As far as having a functional gaming system, I have to get a GPU anyways, so I figure get a 1080Ti and 4K screen now and a new board/chip/ram in the future. I'm far behind on games anyways, newest game I've played was the BF1 beta, besides that It's occasional Skyrim, L4D2, Battlefield BC2 and Borderlands 2.

I'm looking at an EVGA FTW3 1080Ti and Sony 49" X900F for the upgrades.

Thanks for the responses.

The 2600k will be a pretty significant performance decrease compared to a current gen CPU, but the 1080ti is still pretty powerful so you should get decent fps as long as you're not trying to run ultra settings.

Just try to upgrade the CPU next.

If he gets one from a good brand there is no down side to using a TV other than being limited to 60hz like a regular monitor.

Like a regular 24 or 27" monitor from a few years ago when 1080p was still standard.

Just sit a bit farther away and it's fine.

Far more immersive than any regular monitor setup, and while playing games you almost never notice any pixelation.

What purpose is the PC and the TV going to serve?

In any case, a 1080 Ti is fucking overkill for the majority of the games you listed at 2160p. High framerates will be seen (especially in Left 4 Dead 2) if that's what you desire.

It's my primary/gaming pc, some video watching but not primarily. I'm looking at the 1080Ti now as I plan to upgrade in the future and figure why not grab a good card now and not need to upgrade it when I replace the rest of the system. I didn't do a great job when mentioning the games. I haven't done much beyond that as my old GTX570 died in late Dec '17 and was buggy before that so I haven't gotten anything new (been on onboard video). I would like to get some new games, lol. I will say again that with my current base hardware I'm not expecting to be able to play at ultra or even high settings, but I'm ok spending more on a gpu now to make it last longer. I had the 570 for 6yrs.

Eh, it wouldn't be terrible. If you've got plans to go all out on the CPU later down the road, I don't see why not on the 1080 Ti.

That's the plan, I love the system but as great as the 2600K was it's getting old. I just added an aio so I could overclock it some to help limp it along. Regardless of what I do I'm without a gpu now so I've got to do something which if I plan on upgrading the rest of the system in the future, I figured why not grab a 1080Ti now, at least the prices are coming down.

I'm primarily concerned with my current systems ability to drive a 49" 4K screen without having the cpu bottleneck the system.

Also whether or not I should wait and get an 1180, but that's a discussion I can read in dozens of other threads.

Try to OC it to 4.6 at least if you're going for a 1080Ti, you'll need a decent cooler though

Also, a monitor instead of a TV would be great.

I'll work on getting the OC higher, using the Arctic Liquid Freezer 360 in the Corsair Air 540 case so I've done most of what I can to allow for cooling. Is your preference for a monitor over a TV for performance reasons or just personal preference?

Hi

I used a i7 2600k from 2011 to 2018. From 2016 to 2018 I used a GTX 1080 with it. I replaced it with a i7 8700k this year.

The difference in performance between the i7 2600k & the i7 8700k at 4k were the lows in games. The bottlenecks where all GPU.

Now with a i7 8086k & GTX 1080 ti the bottlenecks are still GPU.

I upgraded because my motherboard was dieing & could not get a replacement.

I use a 32" LG 4k monitor. If you are in the US it is on sale at newegg for $399.99

That's good to hear that the 2600K was able to handle the 4K. That's my biggest concern, but if the bottlenecking was from the gpu not the cpu I'll keep pushing this system for a bit longer and do a full board/chip/rarm upgrade in the future.

Unless I am missing something, he will be targeting 4K60.

an i7-2600K OC should be able to do that no problem no?

4K is way more GPU bound, so the 1080ti will be able to stretch its legs.

That's right on, I just wanted to make sure that my system, 2600K, 16gb ram, P8Z68 would not have trouble with a 1080Ti and 4K tv.

I definitely plan to do a board/chip/ram upgrade but right now I have no gpu so that's priority one. From what I saw in the HardwareCanucks video there was actually a performance increase when going from 1080 to 1440. In that video (I have the same board/chip/ram) 4K performance is not measured. It sounds like what I'm hearing here is that being that the gpu handles most of the load that I should be fine on most conservative video settings in games.

In regards to displays I can't really justify buying a fancy 1440 screen with 4K essentially here now so I started looking at 4K options. I want bigger than 27" and don't want widescreen or ultra widescreens so my options are somewhat limited. There aren't many options between 27" and 49" that are non widescreen so after doing some reading and measuring I feel that the 49" would fit the bill. So as long as the 1080Ti can push that screen and the cpu won't somehow mess that up I'll stick with the X900F.

Would just get GTX 1170 if think 1180 will bottleneck will be in $400-500 range and have extra features like ray tracing which 1080Ti doesn't support.

I hear you, I'm torn whether or not to wait for an 1180/1170 or jump on a 1080Ti. I'm itching to have a gpu again as I've been without a true gaming rig since late Dec. I've got a Lenovo Y500 with dual 650's so I've been able to limp along but I'm ready, lol. If I knew when the 1180's were coming out I could probably convince myself to wait. Without a set release date it's hard... I've seen late August but that's only rumor.

I agree with your logic. Without concrete release dates, pricing, arrival of third party cards, you could be waiting months to just get a reference card at an inflated price due to limited quantities.

I personally would wait, but you can also get burned depending on that said availability.

Last year, as I had a Freesync monitor, I was waiting for Vega to launch and put that into my i5-3570 build instead of doing a full PC build so I could game. However, due to limited availability, I decided to just do a full new system build and upgrade my graphics card later as it gave me some performance I needed in other areas.

The waiting game is a risky one and we all know the 1080ti is a top performer today, has matured, and will handle the job.
