Because you should always have backup. Just assume the raid/nas will fail and plan for that. There is no perfect storage soltuion.

Sure but not some proprietary shit where you need the same Hardware and Software for a Rebuild.

to rebuild most of those nas boxes you put anouther drive in nothing special. There running linux under the hood and normal linux software raid. Nothing special.

The premade nas boxes work well for uses like this were you want good software and a quiet low power easy to use box. DIY will be more of a pain to setup and use.

Until something happened and you cant access your data.

I dont know if the are still sold but how about an HP Micro Server?

The are damn cheap and working good. If you want you can put an Rail Controler in and some "cheap" 1TB NAS HDDs.

off the shelf NAS' as a whole just run Linux MD Raid, so its no different to recover from than many DIY systems. A lot of off the shelf nas' can drop down to shell, or you can ofc move the disks to a PC with a full blown linux distro. Most issues with custom built NAS' though are caused by bad configuration and questionable hardware compatibility.

  • 2 weeks later...

It is already the second threat I've found that require this and I'm getting pretty annoyed.

long story short you have 3 options.

1 Make a second Lan and go to that pain to get your thing

2 Make a DAS

3 If you are afraid to let your secrets near the internet build a sterile computer and storage device ( that you should never be connected to other devices, no USB flash, no external HDD, SSD, and the obvious internet. o.O
