Mid range phone

Hey all,

I'm looking to buy a midrange android smartphone; I think the new Honor 10 is pretty interesting, but I can't decide between that and the Honor View 10 and especially the Samsung Galaxy S8.

What do y'all think? Any thoughts are welcome.

If you have another phone in mind lemme know!

Thanks

I liked the S8+ a lot and it should have dropped quite a bit in price

I'll be using it for the obvious stuff like for media (youtube, music..) and some light gaming from time to time. I also like taking photos so the camera needs to be nice, this is why I'm looking into the S8 because its camera is (or at least was when it came out?) pretty great and performs very well in low light (as opposed to the Honors who are pretty meh in low light).. Autofocus needs to be fast and since that pissed me off on my last phone with how slow it was..

OIS is preferred but I guess I can live without it.

Apps have to launch fast, and I'm a heavy multitasker and hate when apps restart when you try to multitask..

Water resistance is neat but again it isn't a deal breaker for me.

that's all I could think of rn.

Haha, the camera doesn't degrade in quality, it just gets surpassed by others; it still takes awesome pictures.

The OnePlus 6 is another consideration.

I'd take a look at the video MKBHD did where you go through a bunch of photos blind to which phone took them. Pick the ones you like. Then find out if it's from the phone you thought. I'd also consider the Pixel 2. Should be getting cheaper since the third is on it's way soon.

iPhone X?

How is that a mid range phone when people classify it as a top tier phone?

I personally would stick with your original suggestion.

This can be subjective, for example apps like youtube can start loading slower (or feel it) after a bad update, this doesn't make the phone slow just the app. Also if you use chrome or other heavy ram apps they can start slowing your device.

My phone runs a Snapdragon 435 with 2GB of ram, my CPU rarely goes past 50%, the ram however almost always sits at 80%. I've not really cared about bottlenecks because I know it's likely due to the ram. The only phone of the 3 with large ram is the view 10 at 6gb, everything else has 4 or less.

Or you can wait till Google releases the new chrome version for androids which will poop on your ram even more...

Strictly between the three you mentioned, I would pick the View 10 because it has some super advanced alien technology in it.

Let me explain...

  • Thinnest of the three by a significant margin (7mm vs 7.7mm vs 8mm)
  • Highest battery capacity of the three by a significant margin (3750mAh vs 3400mAh vs 3000mAh)
  • Can take a microSD card
  • The back of the device can't attract fingerprints or shatter into a million pieces
  • Wide aspect ratio screen without a stinking notch
  • You can cold unlock using fingerprint, without having to lift it off the table

And by the way the iPhone X qualifies as a budget phone, unless you specify a budget.

If you don't tell us what you want or don't want in a phone, we cannot be sure to satisfy your requirements.

Until the phone can talk to me and cook me dinner, I wouldn't consider it alien.

Just being cynical with what I regard to be alien. Because the biggest phone brands for some reason refuse to put a big battery in their high end devices, citing BS reasons.

And then you come in and tell OP to get this specific phone without any explanation...

We don't even know if he's in the US and on a GSM carrier

He can look at the description for explanation.

It doesn't matter where he is. That phone supports global bands.

I agree with this. If any phone needs large batteries, it is those with the power hungry flagship chipsets. My sister's Galaxy S7 with SD820 devours the battery quite quickly.

You mean like how removable batteries cause bulk? Only reason for internal batteries is for IP ratings, anything else it's pure throwaway factor to force you to buy new.

Well he wants a great screen, great camera, and performance. Of the three he mentioned, the S8 would be best for his requirements.

But as I said in my first reply, 'budget phone' is subjective when no budget is given. We don't know where OP lives and how much stuff costs over there.

The problem is Sammy will fail on performance after about a year (or less) depending on how abusive they are to their phone, esp with apps and bloat.

I do agree however depending where they live would really depict how much each phone will cost, in canada a S8 is still about $700-800 from a reputable source, where as the View 10 is about $650 on ebay.

Or maybe don't? I would avoid no warranty phones as tho they have the plague, unless it is coming directly from the manufacture themselves.
