HDD not recognised by disk manager.

Go to solution Solved by Ketellapper,

It was indeed an error in the hard drive, the retailer has swapped it out and is sending me a new one.

Thanks for all the help!

I have built my very first gaming PC, I haven't played any games on it yet, but so far everything seems to work except for one thing... The hard drive (which I would like to use to install my games on).

I am using a samsung 860 evo 250gb as my boot drive and drive for a lot of programs, and I have a WD blue 1tb harddrive to store my games on.

The problem is I can't use my WD hard drive, it shows up in the bios and in the device manager, however it doesn't show up in the disk manager or in the file explorer.

I hope anyone here has any tips for me on how to resolve this issue, if it is resolvable trough software, I wouldn't like to disassemble my PC and send the HDD back to the retailer, but if this is my only option I will do it.

I have attached some screenshots of my device manager and my disk manager. (yes my windows is in Dutch, but you should be able to get the point.)

Look further down the window, you'll find the drive there and can right-click on the empty-space to create a new partition.

Adding to this... If you check the list below you may find the disk listed as offline.

right click on the disk and select "Online". You may need to initialize the disk if it wasn't before.

Why he must format drive if he has files on that drive?

Just RMB on that "Herstel", "change drive letter and paths" and add letter to it. That should be enough.

Hi,

Thanks for responding so quick, but the "herstel" is definitely not my WD HDD as that has 1TB instead of 499MB. So giving that a letter won't enable my hard drive.

If this is not what you meant please let me know.

Thanks for the quick reply, I will be checking if this solves the issue tomorrow, if this does or doesn't get the job done I'll let you know.

Sorry, my mistake. If it's fresh new hard drive, then Razor Blade has right about it.

I am back at my PC and I tried to see if there was an offline disk, but there is none... I've attached a screenshot. I hope you guys have another solution.

Do you know the history of your WD 1TB drive? Have you had problems with it in the past?

If you could please open a command prompt as administrator (right click on command prompt and select "run as administrator)

Type the following commands in order...

  • Diskpart
  • List disk

Then if you could please screenshot the output for us.

Will do, the hard drive should be brand new. Right now my SSD is connected via SATA to SATA1 on my motherboard and my HDD is connected to SATA2 on the motherboard, if nothing works I might try connecting it to another SATA port on my MOBO.

As requested I have attached a screenshot from my CMD.

Please confirm you do have 2 plugs into the drive, one that runs to SATA2 and one that delivers power to the drive.

I definitely had that.

I have contacted the retailer and they've responded and told me it was probably a hardware issue, and they told me to request a return, so they can see it and repair/replace the drive and send it back to me.

It seems like the drive is not being presented to the OS at all. If you try a different port on your motherboard or maybe a different cable and it doesn't resolve your issue I would suspect hardware issue with the drive as well.

I have indeed tried that, I tried using the SATA cable from my SSD which I know for a fact that it works.
