Both jack? The one on the case and the one direct to your motherboard at the back?

my mic works on my laptop i think because the headphone jack and mic jack are combined but on this pc they're separated but i cant hear it even if i plug it into the mic jack

Yeah, you might need a splitter if you have a in-line mic.

Image result for 3.5mm splitter

but even when i plug my headset into the microphone jack, the mic doesn't work

Is it possible the your mic as a mute button on it ?

That will happen if you have a single 3.5mm jack headset or earbud. I'm using earbuds with a line-in mic and the mic won't work if I plug it directly into the mic jack.

wouldent it all just be easier if i get a usb headset? i know the splitter would problably be cheaper though

Well both way works. USB headsets would just have their own built in sound card.
