Hah, if only it was this simple to choose GPUs

It is. HKRyan asks people for their recommendations, so they recommend what they choose by themselves. It may be subjective decission, but that's what he asking for.

I recommend 1060 too, because I choose 1060 by myself. it would be weird if I bought 1060 and recommend RX480 to other people. :)

It depends.

The RX 480 would beat the 1060 in DX12 games. And by also having more VRAM it is a better choice if you are looking to keep the card for a longer time period.

The 1060 generally performs better in DX11 games and also runs cooler due its lower power consumption.

The RX 480 is also compatible with FreeSync monitors, while the 1060 with GSync ones (but I do not expect you to use GSync monitors with such a cheap GPU considering the GSync markup).

If I were you I would go with the 480 (580 if possible). But choose depending on your use case scenario.

That is a terrible way to justify a recommendation. At least give pros and cons of your choice.

I already wrote that people recommend what they use themselves. It's normal. So I, as NVidia fan, will recommend NVidia card and someone else will recommend Radeon card. I like what it works, it's cool, "eats" less power, perform very well in games etc. I don't see many cons.

The 1060 5GB version isn't available outside of China, so I'm not sure how it is priced in comparison to the AMD cards or how it performs.
The GTX 1060 6GB is better in performance than the RX480 and RX570, but I'm not sure how the GTX 1060 5GB performs in comparison.
Because I'm not familiar with the 5GB variant, I'm hesitant to comment either way for it. You may need to do a bit more local research on it to find if it will be suitable for your needs.

As mentioned, if you're using a FreeSync monitor then the RX 570 might be a wise choice. I'd also recommend seeing if you can find some RX 580 8GB cards for around the same price. There's not a huge difference in pricing between the RX 570 and the RX 580.

If you're buying the parts new I wouldn't go the RX 480. However, if you're buying 2nd hand, then you might have more luck of finding a reasonably priced RX480 used than a reasonably priced RX570 used.

Either AMD because of the Memory.

Performance is +/-0, sometimes the one is faster, sometimes the other.

But keep in mind that the 8GiG Memory will benefit you in the future like it did in the Past with Kepler and Tahiti and GTX 780 vs R9-290.

When both were equal in the beginning, right now the Tahiti is way better than GK104 and Hawaii way better than the GTX780, that is in many modern games almost beaten by the Tahitis (Radeon HD7970GHz or R9-280x)

570 8GB out of the match, 480 8gb is a touch faster and both are from AMD

As for RX480 8GB vs GTX 1060 5GB:

1. Pick the one with longer warranty

2. If neither has warranty, get the cheaper card

3. If for some reason 2. doesnt apply and you have a Freesync monitor, get the RX480 8GB. If you have a Gsync monitor, get the 1060 5gb

4. If your monitor doesnt have adaptive sync, get the one that runs cooler. Get the one with open-style cooler.

5. If they use the same cooler type, get the RX 480 8GB. No chance of running out of VRAM, and Nvidia wont cut your customer service because 'this card wasnt meant for you'

I'd stay away from the 5GIB 1060 because its slower than the normal 1060 wich already has a hard time keeping up with the Polaris 10 Chips.

And the -3GiB will be an issue in the future as modern consoles already have 8GiB RAM that is shared however. With larger textures and stuff like that, the more memory the AMD Cards have will be beneficial.

I have the 6GB 1060. It's a really good GPU for 1080p but I have zero idea on the performance of the 5GB version because it's not available outside of China and there's very little info on it

Out of them though, I'd probably pick the RX 570. The extra VRAM will come in handy and you can utilize FreeSync monitors which typically cost less than their G-Sync counterparts. I'd try to find a good priced 580 if I were you however.

However, if you already have a G-Sync monitor, the 1060 is probably your best bet but I'd go for the full 6GB version

this statement leaves much debate. It depends too much on the games used in comparison for a fair judgement. I'd still call the RX 480 and normal 1060 (6GB variant) equal.

Actually there is a Chinese review for the 5gb card available in Youtube (more in bilibili, but youtube is more common I guess)

The conclusion is that 1060 5gb at stock sometimes get beaten by the 1060 3gb, sometimes the other way around, depends on the game. However, if OP's lucky enough to get a card with very overclockable memory, then 1060 5gb can leave the 1060 3gb in the dust and catch up with the 1060 6gb. Of course overclocking isnt guaranteed so it shouldnt be a deciding factor. What doesnt change though is that 1060 5gb < 1060 6gb (tada?) = RX 480 8GB. That's why I still prefer the 480 if other factors cant solve the matter.

I disagree because of the +2GiB Memory the AMD RX480 is a bit better in the long run. The lesser memory on video cards always came back to bite you in the End.

Might still take a year or so for this to happen but it will...

So if you are someone like me who doesn't replace the GPU every year or two and keeps what they have as long as it makes sense, you'd prefer the more memory.

I choose the Radeon HD7970GHz Edition back in 2012. And replaced it just about 4 or 5 years later.

Linus also did a Review of this card. Wasn't that great...

So I don't see a reason for choosing this card over the 8GiB cards at all.

For stuff that relies more on VRAM then processing power this is not really true. If you can afford to keep higher textures the game will look better regardless and it almost entirely relies on VRAM.

I heard the same 'reasoning for purchase' from GTX 770 4GB and 960 4GB buyers, and I think it will end the same for those using the same logic on 480s and 1060s (between 5gb and 6gb onpy, since 3gb also has a half-shot core): enough VRAM to run future games, yet not enough compute performance.
