I have had both companies fail me, but I would honestly recommend WD. I know most people prefer seagate, but out of my 10 Seagate HDD's I had 4 have died, while only 1 of 8 WD drives has stopped working for me. I would also want point out that both of these were running nearly non-stop since around 2010 so the usage is way above average and I can't blaim the company for the dying hdds.

Seagate bought Maxtor, WD bought Hitachi. I've had Maxtor drive die on me, so that rules Seagate out.

I have a mix of Hitachi/HGST, WD and Seagate drives. They all work fine. Get whicherver fits your needs.

Yeah I had Quantum drives fail on me, so when Maxtor bought Quantum and Seagate bought Maxtor that rules Seagate out, right?

WD and seagate are both good. If a 1TB seagate barracuda was 5 bucks cheaper than a 1TB WD blue, i'd buy the seagate.

I've always bought WD drives in the past because in my experience Seagate drives ran hot and had a reputation to fail. But that was more than 10 years ago...things have changed. What changed my mind was running a FireCuda 2TB drive in my main PC for years and never had a problem with it. I have WD blue, green (only WD drives to ever outright fail for me) and their performance black (excellent desktop drive). Haven't had a chance to mess with reds yet. I can say that though all this time, WD still makes a great product and Seagate REALLY stepped up their game.

 

Currently I have Ironwolf in my NAS because I was able to save about $62 over the WD Red drives at the time. So far they've been on 24/7 for 3 months holding my archive data as well as running all of my iSCSI drives (including VMs for my test environment and all my steam games) and have not given me any problems what so ever. If I had to do it all over again I would have only gotten fewer higher capacity drives but likely still went with Seagate.

Some will prefer Seagate, some prefer WD. It’s simply a personal thing... But honestly, both are about equal when you look at their ‘standard’ series and up (don’t cheap out).

Me personally I prefer WD simply because I’ve always used WD and have never had any issues with them. So I don’t have any experience with Seagate drives but I’ll bet they are as good as WD ones.

Whatever is cheaper and on sale. WD blue 1 tb is like the gold standard of budget storage HDD for under 50 bucks but Seagate is right there with them with their cuda series 1 tb i personally have a cuda and i think they are a lot better than they used to be. Either or should be fine but if you are looking for that answer Seagate.

it boils down to personal preference and your experience between those brands. 

 

both are reputable and trusted brands.
