memory being a quick access bank, theoretically speaking, couldnt a entire game be loaded on to the memory such that loading screen are minimized to milliseconds or virtually become useless?

Yes it can  be done there is software that turns your ram into an accesible drive and allows you to intall programs onto it and then when it turns off the data is moved to a place on your hdd as Ram dumps all of its data when it turns off

The issue with ramdisk is that the game ends up duplicating files onto ram during loading.

Also RAM is can only do reads and writes at about 2GB/s. Thats high but only about 4 times faster than an SSD. I have seen 8GB/s but only with a ram cache and after playing around with ram frequency.

so the tech is there, its just game devs dont utilize it this way. shame. loading screens could be a thing of the past.

Most people don't have enough RAM to fit a game (+ 4GB for their system memory) onto the RAM. Big games such as BF4 require 30GB of disk space and therefore RAM space, so you would need at least 34 GB of RAM to be able to do this. They don't want to severely lower the amount of people playing their game by having a 16GB ram requirement. All this would result in is a very long loading screen at the start of the game while it loads the entire game into ram.

Assuming a 50mb/s transfer rate from a hard drive and a 10GB game the initial loading screen would be 20 seconds on top of whatever other things have to be prepared. Then there would be small loading screens throughout the game anyway.

But Imagine it already started loading the next level on the ram when you're nearing the end of the round. Then again, also the server should start loading the map as well and imagine what extra load (thus cost) that would create.

true. but if everything (space provided) or a portion was loaded in the background while you progressed through a map you wouldnt feel like you were waitng.

id be interested to hear this side of the story from an actual game dev. maybe Christ Roberts.
