Depends what you consider mainstream. In the North American market, probably not this year, but almost most certainly next. There's tons of phones in China and abroad over that size, and in the following months as more and more companies reduce bezels and use notches or other ways to put a bigger size screen in a similar sized body, they'll become more popular.

As was pointed out earlier, this wouldn't really be the largest smartphone yet -- on top of what Samsung and Xiaomi have had (or are cooking up), HP was marketing a 7-inch tablet as a phone for India a few years back.  That kind of gigantophone has been a trend in countries where a person's smartphone might be their only computing device.

 

The "iPhone X Plus" (or whatever it's called) would really just take Apple into the extra-large screen category for the first time.  What I find interesting is that it's rumored to be just a bit larger than the Galaxy S9+, which would likely irritate Samsung to no end.  After all, Samsung is the chief architect of the Bigger Numbers Are Always Better school of smartphone design -- it's not used to Apple having an easy-to-sell numerical advantage.
