Hello,

At the moment, I have a 21:9 LG ultrawide screen. I am looking between the gtx 1060 and the rx 580 and I notice that the 1060 has better benchmark results. My monitor supports freesync, and this is pushing me towards the rx580 but I am unsure if the freesync will make as much of a difference as better benchmarks.

PS.

I am looking at getting a VR headset so i don't know if the freesync will out-weigh this also.

Kind Regards,

Brandon

1060 is better fps wise and free sync is nice but only if you cant hit a steady 60 fps in a game so that Vsync works properly. Also if it for VR than the free sync won't affect the headset unless it also has free sync which is not something I have heard of before.

If this was GTX 1070 or RX 580 then I'd say 1070 any day as more raw power can eliminate the need for an adaptive sync, since v-sync and fastsync is more than good enough specially when you adjust your in-game settings correctly to avoid dips.

That said since you're between card of similar performance then I suppose gain the freesync is worth if you're not over-paying for this RX 580 due to mining.

in the US and many other places the 580 has dropped to 1060 level pricing.

only AMD cards still inflicted by mining are the vega cards atm. at least thats how it was last week

What GTX 1060 are you looking at? The 3 GB or the 6 GB version? The 1060 6 GB can be seen as kind of a “1060 Ti” having not only more VRAM but also more power (CUDA cores 1280 vs. 1152) compared to the 3 GB version.

It can also dip into 1440p, but will require lower settings than the RX 580 probably will.

For VR purposes, I would choose the RX 580 and have the extra VRAM.

Depends on what version of the 1060 you are looking at. The 3GB model should be avoided like the plague, the 6GB model is competitive though.

Between the two, the fact that you have a FreeSync monitor already makes this a no brainer. Any insignificant gains that the 1060 might have over a 580 (which is basically has 0) will be immediately lost if you hook it up to a monitor without a variable refresh rate.

If you're looking at the 1060 3gb version, RX 580 hands down.

1060 6gb vs RX 580 is a more interesting question. Honestly the 1060 6gb should be called the 1060 Ti for all intents and purposes since the chip is fundamentally different from the 3GB version as it has more CUDA cores enabled. But since the 6GB version was released first, oh well.

In your case though I would still choose the 580 since your monitor supports freesync. Ever more so if you plan on using your GPU for longer than 3 years since AMD cards tend to be better supported in the long term in drivers.

A prime example is the GTX 780 vs R9 290x from 2013. Back when they were released they were neck and neck, with the 780 outperforming the 290x in some cases. Nowadays the 290x is far faster.

780Ti vs 290x (780Ti does beat the 290x in some, but the reverse is true for a lot more games):

Plus the 290x has an extra gig of VRAM.

Regardless this is off-topic to the thread.

Adaptive sync will give you better gaming experience. Unless you're planning to change monitor in near future i think you should go for the 580 because both card is in similar performance level.

What is the price for both cards?

get the 580, it's worth the 12 pound price premium for freesync.
