1060 or 780ti?

Jack_Wyp

I am doing some research for a potential PC I would build, and I was planning on waiting for GPU prices to come back down before I buy one. My original plan was to buy a 1060 3gb, but I just wanted to check the used market. And I can find 780 TIs for 50 dollars cheaper than a 1060 3gb, and the 780ti is slightly faster. Would you consider the 780ti?

1060 6gb = 780ti > 1060 3gb

Get a 780ti if you can find it around or below $200 usd

Try using the PSU Tier List!

If you don't mind the higher power consumption, the 780 Ti is still a pretty decent card.

The GTX 1060 3GB will most likely be receiving driver updates long after the 780 Ti has stopped being supported. If you factor that in with possibly buying the 6GB model, you'll have twice the VRAM and it won't be cut down like the 3GB model is. I recommend going with either 1060 model if you're planning on holding off your next GPU upgrade for more than 2-3 years.

1060 3gb is about equal to the 780ti so if you're fine without the warranty that the 1060 comes with then maybe you should go for it, but I'd try to find the 780ti for even cheaper even if you have to wait a few weeks for a good deal to come up.

Uh no.

780ti is powerfull enough on paper but Kepler cards are left in the dust when it comes to the game optimisation.

In older games (2016 and older) it will be on par with the 1060 3GB but in new games even 1050ti will easily outperform the 780ti.

The 980 blew all of kepler out of the water when it was released because of optimization (10-20 percent better than 780ti depending on game).  And the 1060 series is on par with the 980 in games today.

So you get about what you pay for.

I've never seen the 1050 ti out performing a 780 ti, maybe a regular 780, but the game is probably bugged if it's losing in that situation.

These benchmarks are from Q4 2016. You can see GTX 1050 2GB outperforming GTX 770 2GB.

In newer games, the difference is even larger. Sadly, they have not tested with GTX 780/780ti.

Have in mind that when the GTX 960 released, it was actually a slower card vs the GTX 770 but it started outperforming the GTX 770 quite a bit as the newer games were comming. GTX 1050 is on paper quite a bit worse than the GTX 770 as well, yet it matches the GTX 770 and even outperforms it quite a bit.. and thats in the Q3/Q4 2016 games.

Actually, it would be best to compare the GTX 770 to the AMD Radeon HD7970/R9 280X. They used to trade blows on a game to game basis, now the performance difference favors the AMD cards by quite a bit.

770 is significantly slower than the 780 though, also 780/780ti overclock very well, and since gpu boost 3 is a constant oc on the card I figure it would be a fair comparison

At stock. My overclocked 780 gets equal performance to my friend's 1060 3Gb.

The 780 and 780 Ti hold their own well in older games but lack of optimizations has caused them to under perform in newer games.  I guess it depends on what you play.

I use mine is all of my new games. Kinda prefer it as I can’t use new cards with such poor cpu’s.

Quite playable. And as people like to quote youtubers, plenty of videos about driver optimization and old cards and how it normally doesnt matter. Unless the game has issues that require a patch everyday, the card won’t care either way.

buy the 1060 6gb only I think the 3gb wont be enough v ram for more then another year or so, however I would at least buy a gtx 1070 for futureproofing for the next 2-3 years at 1080p ultra

Go with 1060 3GB since it's only $50 more imo but you should consider the 6GB 1060 if it's not too much more expensive.

I have two 780ti cards in SLI, they hold their own - they still run most games at 1440 with good detail at a reasonable speed (Though, they are paired with an 8700K). If I had to buy a new card now I wouldn't get one again though.

Like most people are saying before this post, I'd definitely go for something newer, especially with more RAM because I'm somewhat limited with the 3GB that each one has (Still only 3GB total in SLI).
