OSX on any HDD is gonna be slow. But a usb won't be much slower than a internal ones. Get a ssd.

You can't comapare the sequentical speeds, the os looks at random iops, and there much slower than any ssd.

ok i mean i already have the hdd and dont want to spend anymore money, is there anyway to test usability without installing

the drive gtes an average of 80MB - 105 MB transfer speeds (dont know if that matters though)

These are sequential read speeds. When dealing with many small files, you're not going to get these kind of speeds. You would also need to take a look at the IOPS.

I wouldn't run from it from an external drive. The performance is usually not satisfactory.
