No, hosting providers charge anywhere between $15/month to $100/month depending on your needs, bandwidth, etc.

Hosting it yourself, out of your own home, is completely pointless unless you just want to VPN back home from outside your home.

Hey guys,

I wonder how to set up a own VPN without buying one from NordVPN or some other provider.

Additionally I'd like to know which hardware is needed to set it up - a server or so?

And will my own VPN be in any way that fast as a "professional" VPN from NordVPN?

Thanks in advance!!

You would need bandwidth first, which nobody short of ISPs and VPN providers have access to.

And a VPN service provider has that bandwidth?

So you would rather host your own which would mean renting server space and buying/renting a server, and paying monthly for that?

Hosting out of your home literally defeats the purpose for anything leaving the home.

A somewhat easier thing to do would be to use PHProxy and Apache to make your own proxy.

it's time

Is it enough for gaming / movie watching? Can you send me a link to this server?

Ah, good to know. Although if more than 1TB of data is needed then I'm sure the price does jump up a bit?

I was going off of colo prices that I remember from a while back.

Its 1 cents a gigabyte after the 1st TB. My isp is capped at 1 TB so i guess i never really thought about it. Digital Ocean is a pretty good deal price wise.

Its fine for watching movies. I haven't tried using it for games, i'm sure there is going to be a latency penalty going through the vpn. I mostly only use it on my phone when i'm on public wifi.

https://www.digitalocean.com/pricing/ Digtal ocean is a VPS (virutal private server) not a vpn. So I rent the $5 a month server and run openvpn on the server.

https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-set-up-an-openvpn-server-on-ubuntu-16-04 Heres a guide that shows you how to set up open vpn on the server.

There are plenty of apps for pc and phones for using openvpn.

Is this also that private like a rented VPN by NordVPN for example?
