get something with an i7 and a dGPU and at least 12gb ram (i myself am looking for a laptop with a similar budget but don't mind the size)

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA65C7B05873

Hello all,

I'm currently looking to buy a laptop that I can take to school and do some lighter video edit and animation for my beginner youtube channel. The question is would it be worth it to get the i5 with 16gb of ram or the i7 with 8gb of ram? Or maybe even looking into other laptops, I'm not hard set on the xps 13 but from what I found it's the most powerful thin and light.

Thank you for your help!

i7 because you can upgrade the ram later.

I thought the new xps 13 is not upgradeable.

Then get something else in that budget range that isn't as restrictive.  What is the budget anyways?

I'd say like 1399 at most.

Does it have to be a thin and light?

Under 14". wow. the only thing i can think of that's less than 14 is an alienware R3 13.3" but it goes for around 1400 and only has 8GB ram

Actually the screen is even more important. That's why I like the xps 13. Other then the brightness it's really good.

If you're fixed on getting a sub 14" screen then i suggest that you just stick with the i7 model of the xps

so for after effects, illustrator and resolve (I know I could use premier, I'm just used to resolve) the i7 with 8gb is better?

All the specs seem good but it has an integrated GPU, for your animations i think a Dedicated GPU would do you some good

okay not that much animation. I can't afford a dedicated graphics. So I'm giving up on that.

You could with your budget being a max of 1300 i believe? But you'd be giving up that 14" screen for a larger one you are keen on that screen size then i think the inspiron 13 is a good choice
