Gtx 970 still a good card?

Go to solution Solved by Valkyrie Lenneth,

4790k and 970 is plenty for a while still, just dont put everything maxed out on cetain games, ;v

So I have a gtx 970 with an i7 4790k

if it helps at all I have two in sli

i wanted to know if it will still be a good card for gaming.

my priorities are to be able to play any new game that comes out at least 60fps, and I don’t care if it’s not on ultra settings. So will this be a good 1080p card to run most games at 60fps at any setting for a decent amount of time?

For the money there isn't a better card for 1080/60, both because you already own it and you can get a used one for like $150.

Until you can get a 1070, there isn't an upgrade I would;d recommend.

Yeah, a 970 is still a nice card. Wouldn't go sli for 1080p, because it's not really necessary and you introduce the usual SLI problems to your system.

Ryzen 5 5600, 32GB DDR4, GTX 3070Ti, Acer Predator x34

InWin 901

I have been running sli for awhile now and haven’t noticed any system issues but of course the game support is lacking, still love the frame boost in rainbow six siege lol

I have one GTX 970 and it's good for 1080p 60fps gaming, even when playing new games at high to ultra settings.

The 970 is still a good card, especially when you're playing at 1080p. I have an i5 4460 and a GTX970 and it works very well with 1080p on modern games.

I'd give it another year or two of 1080p high details for most AAA games. Beyond that you're likely to be pushing it as it'll be a 5 year old card.

Main System: EVGA GTX 1080 SC, i7 8700, 16GB DDR4 Corsair LPX 3000mhz CL15, Asus Z370 Prime A, Noctua NH D15, EVGA GQ 650W, Fractal Design Define R5, 2TB Seagate Barracuda, 500gb Samsung 850 Evo
Secondary System: EVGA GTX 780ti SC, i5 3570k @ 4.5ghz, 16gb DDR3 1600mhz, MSI Z77 G43, Noctua NH D15, EVGA GQ 650W, Fractal Design Define R4, 3TB WD Caviar Blue, 250gb Samsung 850 Evo

That's basically a 1060 3gb card, and that's plenty for 1080p.

In my testing it's slightly less powerful than the 1060 3GB, but it's notably hotter and seems quite a bit more power hungry. Medium to high airflow recommended even for stock operation.

I just tested it and found I could get 85 fps avg - 61fps 1% lows in Fortnite, 77 fps avg - 51 1% lows in Just Cause 3, and 47 fps avg - 39 1% lows in Witcher 3, all on Epic/max/Ultra settings. This was with an i3 8350k @ stock speeds, the GPU power limit set to 107% and a slightly aggressive fan curve.

So I don't think you should upgrade just yet. You could always overclock them! There is at least a scientifically significant performance boost by just raising the power limit a few % (although I would assume you're already doing this).

Main rig: i7 8086K // EVGA Z370 Micro // 16GB Gskill TridentZ 3200Mhz CL14 // Sapphire Pulse RX 7800XT// a variety of noctua cooling // Corsair RM750x v2 //  Fractal Meshify C

Secondary rig: R5 3600 // MSI B450i Gaming Plus // 16GB Gskill FlareX 3200CL14 // MSI GTX 1080ti Gaming X // Cooler Master V650 // Fractal Meshify C

Audio setup: Audient iD4 // Adam A7X // Sennheiser HD 650 // Sennheiser HD 25-II // Audio Technica M50x // Sennheiser Momentum 4

The trouble with GTX 970 is the 3.5G V ram which is not quite enough for modern titles.. I ran into a lot of frame drop issues because of it and it's frustrating.. having 2 cards in SLI won't help.

I sold my 2 GTX 970 2 years ago and upgraded to a single GTX 1080.. It was one of the best upgrade decision..  Games run smoother .. have a higher min. fps and more stable in general.

You might want to wait for GPU price to come down though,
