Does overclocking reduce lifespan of a cpu?

I want to oc r3 2200g to 1.65 ghz and I'm wondering if that will decrease a cpu lifespan?

Maybe in theory, but generally no one cares since chips last too long and you would have replaced way before it dies.

Yes, but as long as you don't raise the voltage too high it shouldn't be too big of an impact to matter.

If you up the voltage, it will reduce your CPU lifespan. If you don't and overclock at the stock voltage (usually 1.35V), your good.

No one has provided evidence and i have been in the PC scene for over 10 years, only time a CPU died was when someone did bad OC settings, usually just the motherboard died though.

No.

 

Increasing the voltage reduces the lifespan of a CPU, not the clock speed. Many processors can be overclocked without necessitating a voltage increase.

There is not a totaly cut and dry answer here.

Mostly the answer is "NO".

 

However, extreme OCing will shorten a CPU's lifespan, but not due to the frequency, but rather the votlages used, added with the loads placed on thecomponent, and the possible heat, or more likely the type of extreme cooling required. LN2 cooling for example, even with protections from ice and water, will eventualy lead to premature failure.

 

Mainstream OCing (done correctly) however is highly unlikely to cause premature failure within the the realistic consumer use lifespam of the component.

 

In mainstream use, heat is the primary contributing factor to hardware degredation, ether caused by poor cooling in general at stock settings, or insufficent cooling at higher voltages.

 

So, for your specific case, the answer is "NO".

 

My personaly current experience: I have run my 3930k (stock 3.8ghz 1.2v) at 4.6ghz 1.376v since i got it, for the last... 6 years now i think. ZERO issues what so ever. And my 780 Classified (stock 1.16v) since release at 1.2v, again no issues.
