There are rumours of a new pixel watch in the works, maybe wait and see what that'll amount to. Probably going to be released alongside the Pixel 3

Just get an Apple Watch. The series 3 is powerful enough and last a long time now

I've heard good things about the Ticwatch as a budget option like the Pebble, it has google's wear OS and an OLED touch screen and other features.

It's a shame, because it really is the best smartwatch on the market.  I'm not even being hyperbolic -- it's that Android Wear has stagnated, Samsung's Gear line isn't much better, and Fitbit's Versa (my favourite non-Apple smartwatch) loses its lustre quickly if you aren't fitness-minded.  Apple is simply the only company in the business that actually gives a damn about making a good general-purpose smartwatch and the platform to match.

 

The smartwatch market in 2018 is a bit like the MP3 player market in 2006, where it wasn't so much that the iPod was good as that its competitors were fumbling their responses to it.

I disagree with that, I'd say the Gear S3/Sport and the Series 3 are equally good. On an iPhone the Series 3 has a bit of an advantage due to having better support, while the Gear S3/Sport has the advantage on Android devices for the same reason. Although, I'd still strongly consider (and did consider) a Gear S3/Sport with an iPhone.

 

I actually prefer a few things about Tizen OS/the Gears -- the app switcher/viewer, the rotating bezel, and the round design. The reason I sided with the Series 3 was the fact that I can respond to texts, use Apple Pay, and that it was just a bit smaller -- the S3 was way to big and because of the design (ribbed bezel), the Sport would catch on my jacket/shirt. If it wasn't for those three factors (mainly the last two), then I likely would've ended up with the Sport. Had the sport been fully round, then I may have gone for it even given those two/three shortcomings.

I dislike them for reasons most likely others don't share. See, my day job has me dealing with the backend of these things and it's the most broken BS. Most likely people on this forum don't have to take stat hits regarding disconnecting a line because these things don't transfer to someone else's account.

 

You have to disconnect the line, add a new line on another account and then reactivate. I get a stat hit for taking a disconnect and the customer gets an activation fee for the new line. I loathe these things, but not for the usual hurr hurr it's Apple reason. Customers have no clue how big a pain in the ass the series 3 watch is behind the scenes.

I'd say Apple has some advantages (these may change given rumors of a Gear S4 in a few months), even if I would be fine wearing a Gear on my wrist if I primarily used Android.

Bands also matter.  It's funny that you can technically swap out bands on the Gear line, but in terms of people actually doing it?  Not so much.  As annoying as it is that Apple made a proprietary band connector, it seems like the practical reality is that people are more likely to swap out bands on the Watch precisely because it's so much easier than with Samsung or most other smartwatch makers.

 

Fitness-wise, I'd say Apple's Activity app is, in some ways, its ace in the hole: it's easy to understand, good at motivation and provides achievable goals.  (This only matters if you're using a watch as a fitness tool, but still.)

I agree about the physical case size as that was one of the biggest problems I had with both the Gear S3/Sport, but the Apple Watch is only slightly better as I really want a round 42mm~ watch that isn't stupidly bulky. The S3 is way too big at 46mm~ and too thick and the Sport is a bit too thick, not fully round, and the ridged bezel makes it get caught on long sleeves much easier.

 

As for bands, switching bands on the Gear is just as easy as it is on the Apple Watch. Buy any 20/22mm band and clip it on, done. 

 

I didn't care about fitness, but Samsung Health seemed quite good from what I could tell, as did any of the apps that I used. 

 

But having used all three for at least 3 weeks, I'd that they're all equally good/capable and it just comes down to personal preferences.
