The age of tracking

SAV1OUR

With the ever growing power in technology there is no way to change or influence the way in which people use it. One good example of this that's happening right now is the NSA and people fighting for their right of privacy.

What do you guys think this will mean and what's your opinion on tracking and invasion of privacy?

They can watch me watch porn all they want.

I never quite understood the huge thing about privacy, if you're seriously that afraid of them knowing what you do, then don't do it. Know what I mean?

I understand they're going about it all the wrong ways, lying saying it's "to protect us from terrorists" etc, but it doesn't really effect me so its w/e

That's the thing. What happens when there are people who need to do things privately?

... Say the government becomes corrupt to the point of dictatorship. It is people, like you, who don't care, that is paving the way for that to be hard to fight.

I know it's a "what if?", but people who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

"Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety." - Benjamin Franklin

And that's not an "internet quote", he really wrote that.

"Oh, that will never happen." ... I'm sure the Germans thought the same thing before Hitler came into power.

When your at home by yourself doing whatever you do you wouldn't want someone watching you over your shoulder all the time, well personally I don't want someone watching or listening to what I do on my pc when Im alone. But what's ticking me off is being told that you have the right to privacy and now their going to be watching us all the time

They're not physically standing there over my shoulder bugging me, so as far as I'm concerned they're not there. I understand your point, of the fact that we have all these rights and just because of the patriot act, and our corrupt government, they run around doing whatever the hell they want whenever they want to. That pisses me off, not so much the other things. I don't think they should be able to do whatever they want.

I don't have anything to hide myself. But I know, one day, someone might have something important and valuable to hide. Like, I don't know, their plans and acts to overthrow a potential corrupt dictatorship.

I edited my post btw. Added a bit to it.

Seriously. You are only considering me and you. And the people of now. Think of Posterity (those to come after us) and what they might face. And what tools they may need to face it.

There is no good that can come of this, and the lies upon lies are just proving that to me more and more.

"It isn't affecting me, so why should I care?" ... I'm sorry, but I sincerely believe that that is what a lemming would say. And I'm not going to jump off the cliff just because so many want to.

Keep in mind this is a extreme example, what if your in a country ridden with war and your contacting someone to get you out and the government or whoever are against it are listening and watching so they come in and lock you up or whatever.Wouldn't you feel like there's no safe option?

One of the major problems is that they're able to use this to their advantage. They can suppress anyone who threatens their reputation, for a start.

Maybe you've been protesting against the government, and you have a large audience that listens to you. It's not hard for them to track you down and blackmail you (which they've already done to some people), or even worse, get rid of you...

I'm not saying it doesn't affect me, because it does. It makes me angry that the government runs around and does whatever they want, but it's for that exact reason that I'm not really sure we can even do anything at this point to fix it, because of congress, the senate, and other branches of government are SO corrupt, and so over-the-top only in it for themselves, that I'm really unsure what WE as the PEOPLE can do at this point. Yes we have the power to vote, yes we have the power to protest, but will that honestly fix it? What's to say the next people we vote for don't turn into the exact thing we're trying to get rid of?

I'm not so upset about the privacy part, but in the fact of them doing literally WHATEVER they want, with NO consequences, because you know if someone did to them what they're doing to us right now, they'd lock them up for the rest of forever and throw away the key. (Like Snowden, he leaked what was really going on, and they crucified him basically)

I don't like the fact that we have all these constitutional rights, and it practically means nothing to them.

What do you need to do that nobody else can know about?

My Problem with the NSA is their boundaries. I watch YouTube and stuff like this at home. I couldn't care less if there was someone standing behind me filming me watching a movie or reading this forum BUT they also spy on professional work. No matter how large a company they spy on internal documents, online meetings, etc. and this is what really bothers me because Companies work hard to get ahead of each other and the NSA just reads what they develop. Who says they won't use it to stick to Ford or GM (in my case, I work in automotive ;) )

That's a great point.

And anyway, why should they be able to spy on us? They claim that it's to counter the terrorist threat, and yet they can't even prove that they have stopped a single attack.

The way I see it is that the NSA overstepped the bounds with the secret rubber stamp courts and the hacking into private data pipes, like google and whoever else they got into.

But the book 1984 also comes to mind as they slowly push the boundary further and further.

I'm going to be blunt with this but if you think you have nothing to hide because you're "doing nothing wrong" then you've completely misunderstood the point of privacy and have done exactly what these programs and arguments wanted you to do. The purpose of privacy isn't to hide your illegal behavior, it's about control. When an entity is able to systematically observe and record everything you do then there's nothing stopping them from using it against you or others and if you think there is, again being blunt, you're incredibly naive. The very purpose of the NSA is to spy on citizens and this mentality is what allows them to do so without repercussions despite the fact it's yet to find and/or stop any terrorist act (source).

Probably wasn't the best way to say how I feel since I really don't like them seeing every part of my life and I feel like they overstepped the rules that were put in place at the very beginning, and that I feel like this is going closer to the KGB type surveillance and what not of Russia/USSR during that period in time

Look, we don't what privacy is anymore and it's way too far gone. If I want to use the services then I have accept their policies and I'm going to accept because I don't live under a rock.  "systematically observe and record everything you do then there's nothing stopping them from using it against you or others" Again the NSA can watch my activity my LTT or netflix, are they really going to put a beside my name because I watched transformers? I have accepted the fact that if you are going on the Internet or own a cell phone that absolutely nothing is private, obviously certain organisations have gone too far in what they need to know about me and I dislike the fact that someone knows what I have bought and what I have watched on Netflix don't get me wrong, but its time for everyone else to accept it and deal with it. The NSA isn't going anywhere and have fun trying to change the way they operate. Corporations like Google are just as guilty of spying and they won't stop. We have no power regardless of what things we think we can change do this is not one of them.

In a perfect world:

Government keeps data on everyone. Yes they can use it against you, if you're a criminal and do horrible shit on your computer like pedophillia work and such. Cyber crimes will plunge with the abomination of anonymity. (Of course only the government has access to this).

CCTVs everywhere. Not only will people think twice about shanking each other on the street, at least you'll know who did it.

Keep tabs on suspicious people without needed "permission". This one goes without saying.

I don't know about you guys, but security should be anyones top priority, unless you're a selfish bastard who sacrifices the safety of your country so that you can jack off in complete privacy.

The bigger concern, at least to me, is not about my own privacy, but rather about the privacy of influential people: particularly, people that I agree with but that these powerful government entities with immense amounts of power, etc. are against.
