Improving mbps

I live in a small mountain town where we have 1 big isp and 1 smaller isp. Unfortunately where my house is located I can only receive the smaller isp with 6mbps speed max (they say) whereas the bigger one we could be getting 35mbps. I'm less than 1 mile from bigger isp's fiber hookup and they said if I really wanted it I could pay 12,000 dollars to get it hooked up. I don't have that kind of money but if anyone knows how to improve the 6mbps in gonna be getting please help. Thanks

6mbps is all they're sending out and all you're going to get. The only improvement that can be made on your end really is assuring that your setup is making the most of that 6mbps.  Simply, finding equipment that delivers the full 6mbps to all devices on your network. From there, a DNS server change, and maybe a tracker/ad blocker to block additional content loading on webpages might be worth while.

If your speed is limited to 6 Mbps, you're limited to 6 Mbps. ISP-s do it on their side by limiting your bandwidth, nothing you can do about it other than switching providers.

Your options are basically:

 

- Move house

- Switch ISPs and pay the 12 grand

 

There's nothing else you can do.

Both are expensive, but a house would cost more than the internet. And I doubt he'd be allowed to run his own mile long line of fibre or copper.

Well, you are paying for a 6mbps service and you seem to be getting a 6mbps service and you're only provider offers a 6mbps service...  I suggest you get a very, very, very large jar and start collecting spare change until you have $12 000 to pay for the infrastructure costs of expanding fiber to your home.

Move to Austin TX or Orange County CA and tell us how great Google Fibre is.

 

In the mean time you can try to tune to get the most out of it.. you might want to try setting up a squid webcache proxy. Oh one other thing you might be able to do... see if your ISP will sell you two lines to the same place and trunk them together. That isn't for the feignt of heart but PFSense can do that.. look for guides on Multi-Wan I believe you want to customize for throughput not reliability or fallover.

You have a 3rd option but only if you have neighbors willing to split the cost with you.
