both amazon and ccl have the best z270 overclocking board for £120 posted. damn cheap price is you have a budget mobo and want something nicer. or if you really like ram tweak, this is a great board.

I'm keeping the VIII Hero. It's my main daily use system and I'm not going to reinstall anything on that!

 

I do have two crappy MSI boards I hate, this could replace one of those... wait, I might resell those here later. I have two marvellous MSI motherboards. Yes, that'll work.

 

Seems like an overkill mobo to move my 6600k into, and I'm trying to avoid scope creep by not buying more CPUs...

It's down to £110 now. I give in... look what just arrived... this has to be the heaviest mobo box I've ever handled. Going to move the 6700k from my VR system into it later.

Any reason? Having said that, given it is summer all my systems other than main are off...

 

I'm trying to avoid scope creep in not buying a 7700k at current pricing (even used). Will see what a 6700k can do, and this could likely be my first play with sub-ambient cooling too.

Really hot atm. I haven't oc'ed anything for 39 days now. I prefer OCing in winter now. I have got my rc cars out for the summer.

Know the feeling, and might explain why I can't replicate some of my older clocks. Still, this is an ideal time to try sub-ambient for me...

None of the above (yet). Wonder how far I can get with water ice only. A stupid idea I have is there are cheap chest freezers, could fill it with something that remains liquid to -18C and try using that... I know it wont be 24/7 operable, as it will probably take a long time for it to reach target temperatures, but should be good for bench sessions.

The cheaper chest freezers were 60L, what temp change and material were you using? I did some back of envelope calcs based on water ice at -18C going to 0C should last some hours holding around 0C, although I can't remember the details assumed.

 

My plan to get around condensation is simply to mount everything upside down so gravity will take care of it.

Are you leaving the freezer on while you run I guess? 

 

How long it last will mainly depend on the volume of coolant and how much heat your components put into it. Obviously having 60l will last 3x as long as 20l, if you have the freezer on as active cooling as well this will be even longer. 

 

My 20l cool box is just tap water at about 8-10c with the ambient of 20-24c takes about 30-40mins to get the water to room temp using a single cpu and gpu like 5960x or 1800x with a mid-high power draw gpu with heavy oc. Maybe 600w power draw overall. 

 

Turning upside down will help a lot but the pcb it self might get cold after a long session so even basic insulation should be used. Saying that I don't use insulation when I Ln2 sometimes, but then there isnt any water, it's all ice.

I don't think having the freezer on would make much difference. They're low power... My earlier calculation assumed melting ice from -18C to water at 0c, with the liquid part staying at 0C during the process. A revised plan might be to use an alternate liquid which remains such down to -18C, but the downside of this would be that it'll probably have a lower heat capacity than water.

Ok, I was going to throw ice into a bucket as my 1st try. I've already started putting bottles of tap water in my existing freezer to prepare for it, although I know the transfer of the cooling will be limited.
