Windefend disk usage 100% MsMpEng.exe

Hi all,

I have a question, has anyone had an issue with Win10 where Windefend or 'MsMpEng.exe' is using 100% of your disk?

I had this issue when I first got my gaming rig a few months ago and it was slow as hell, wondering what was causing it I made this discovery.

 

The only work arounds I found was to disable Defender in the registry and disable all of the services, which helped but my disk was still hitting 80%. In the end the only way around this was for me to get an SSD and reinstall Win10. 

 

My issue has been solved but I am asking this question because a friend of mine has the same issue, surely there must be a fix for this other than installing Win10 onto an SSD?

 

Any help appreciated.

Check scheduled tasks.

 

Replace defender with a different AV. Run gpedit.msc and go into Windows Components and enable "turn off defender anti virus"

Probably gaming or helping technophobes with tech...

Tried all of the above. Scheduled tasks doesn't fix MsMpEng.exe running, which is the task that is causing the issue as far as I can see. Replacing with a different AV (I used Avast) still does not stop the 100% disk usage from happening, as despite trying all of my original post and also what you've mentioned MsMpEng.exe still continues to run. 

For people like you and myself we can take steps to solve the problem, but for less technical people I can imagine this is an incredibly frustrating issue!

The solution or workaround to this must be documented on the web somewhere surely. I've seen it once or twice but all our Win 10 domain machines here at my office don't do this.

Probably gaming or helping technophobes with tech...

You'd think so! When I was trying to fix the issue myself I must have looked at every single forum post, video and article about this. I even let Microsoft support engineers remote into my machine to see if they could fix it and they couldn't. Like I said, in the end the only fix for me was to swap out my HDD for an SSD and reinstall Win10
