I noticed something..Linus, and TTL, the two tech guys i prefer, both use SSDs. TTL uses 2 Corsair 480gb drives, while Linus uses 8 120gb drives. Both of these solutions add up to about 1TB. Why would they need so much? Their OS would be on it..programs..I don't think they would put projects and videos on it because they use a home server. So what could that be used for? Post below on what YOU would use it for! And TTL does not play games on his main computer, which is even more mysterious on why he would want so much space.

Would a 512GB drive be enough for you?

Well one reason im guessing is to not care about what they put in their pc, not having to worry about free space and all, plus more ssd= more faster and stuff

And 512gb for me is not enough, for steam games and video recording its just not enough, have around 2.3TB in my system!

Hey there. You are looking mighty fine today, have my virtual cookie!

I am fine with a 128GB drive to be honest. 256GB is me being very comfortable and have no worry of space, and IIt also can set my drive as I want (dual partition).

That said, I do have a 1TB HDD on the side. The 1TB HDD is used for backup (I use Windows 8 File History), I put videos, music, pictures, etc... Videos and music are streamed by the video player, so there is no load time, and videos are quick. Pictures are small in file size, so loads quickly.

Projects, Documents are on my SSD as while my projects are big, the program needs to load it all and take time on an HDD, same for compiling projects. Documents are small, so no need.

1TB HDD is still excessive for my needs. The only reaosn why i got a 1TB HDD is for the high density platters, for faster speeds.

I uninstall games that I don't play anymore, no point in keeping them. If I think I might play them again, I just copy the game installed folder, and paste it my HDD. Games, like the great majority of programs, their installers are nothing more than extracting downloaded files (or whats on the disk).

They might use their SSD for recording streams or saving their videos on it. A 120gb SSD would be adequate for me for a boot drive and I would buy a 1tb hdd for data storage.

When you go with 8 SSDs in RAID 0 like Linus is not about the capacity really. Is more about the performance. Let's say you have 1 500MB/s read/write 128GB SSD. With two of those on RAID 0 you would have ~1000MB/s read/write 256GB . Three of those and you would have ~1.5GB/s read/write 384GB, etc.

SSDs in general don't have any effect on gaming performance, just on loading times.

So that's why. It's all about the performance, not the capaacity

I have 458GB left out of 1 TB and I have only had my computer since September. About 245GBs is just games, most of which I never play or I have finished already.

Another big use for data is recorded game files at high quality. 1080P at 60FPS takes up TONS of space.

BTW SpaceSniffer is an awesome tool to see what is taking up your hard drive space.

Before it died on me, I was comfortably running a Corsair F120, so 120gb, between Windows 7 and Ubuntu. It covered the basic applications and OSes with plenty of room to spare. However, that being said, I wouldn't mind having an SSD large enough to store my games on, in addition to the OSes, so that's about a 512gb SSD for me.

Edit: I also have 4x3TB drives in my system, but it also acts as a home server and makes productive use of the storage inside it.

256GB for OS

1TB for Storage, this includes; Games, Movies, Music, TV Shows, Pictures, etc.

1TB for Video Capture

This is how I have setup my computer. I currently have 200GB free of my SSD, 250GB free for my 1TB and 920GB free for my second 1TB(just got done with a project, so free space!).

I bet Linus will be putting ALL his games on his main OS "drive(s)".

Good idea, means you can make a full OS drive backup on your 800gb partition ;)

Games and music and Photos and peace of mind knowing that i never have to worry about running out also they might have it in a raid array which if done in a way would only be half a TB

I got my storage in November, 1.5 TB, and in that time I'm almost ready to buy more space just because of the music I record and produce, the sample libraries involved, and the recording of Fraps videos - and I am religious about cleaning away mis-recordings and such....

Eventually I'll end up with 2x 512MB SSDs and 2x 4GB HDs in my main computer, and 4x 3TB in my home server (with parity)

In case the moderators do not ban me as requested, this is a notice that I have left and am not coming back.

He probably needs the space for videos. I have a 60GB SSD for OS and 160 GB SSD for games (which is full :[ ) and a 1TB Black HDD for everything else like movies music and video editing and its all i need (for now)
The thing is, he has a Home Server. I'm pretty sure he would use that for storage. The only thing I can see is RAID.

I ay, the more space you have, the less frustrated you'll become when it comes close to filling up! I had a 320gb WD Blue drive that I was constantly shuffling files to my external 320 to save space. The drive would fill and bog down and it was a PITA. But, when I purchased a WD Black 1TB drive, I didn't need to worry about space as much. For me, if I come close to filling this drive, it will come down to how organized and clean I can keep my Hard drive, not how much space I didn't have!
