Spectrum Internet plan

So this will be my first time opening my own account. Spectrum only has 2 options for me. Up to 1000mbs 40 $60 a month or an additional $25 a month for 400mbs. I plan on having my PC plugged into my router. I download files from time to time. In my apartment there will be 2 laptops, 2 phones and my PC connected to the network at any given time. Opinions welcome!

Kinda figured, just didn't know what to expect since it says "up to"

It's plans starting at 100mbps, but speeds up to 100mbps. i.e. you can/will get speeds lower than 100mbps, however it's pretty much irrelevant as even with 10mbps you'd be fine.

Yeah I have friends that don't live too far from me and they have data caps. I'm in Dallas so it's NBD for me. My room mate can't afford more than is necessary (neither can I) so if I go with the 400 I'l be paying the $25 extra myself

Most people don't want to live in NYC or Chicago, also I live in a city it doesn't change much unless the city is massive but living in a place like that results in higher cost for pretty much everything else so eh whatever.

As a Spectrum customer myself with their Gigabit plan and having been a TWC customer for years before Spectrum bought them out I can say they're really good about usually delivery at or above what you pay for a good 95% of the time with the other 5% usually being very close to what you pay for. If you can afford the 400Mbps plan go with that but from what I've heard the 100Mbps plan is supposed to be upped to a 200Mbps plan in most areas sometime this year. They also don't charge for modem rentals either so that's always a plus :)

For us South-Africans, 100mnps at home is a fairly new thing, but its more than what we need. 4x phones, 1x 4K tv, 3x computers. I'm paying $135/month. :/

100mbps would suit you well, and it should be stable at around that or in a lot of cases, you tend to get a bit higher than what's advertised. But that speed be what you get as a wired connection coming from the modem, not necessarily what you'll get over WiFi.

There's no point to buy a modem if the free one they're providing does the job just fine, which it usually does. It's the router which is usually the problem (although still not always). If it turns out that their modems are causing problems THEN and ONLY then does it make sense to buy one.

The modem is free so I would only buy your own if you have issues. Just don't take the router they offer, buy your own :)

No need to buy a modem if its free. Though its going to be a modem router combo most likely. If the WiFi is shit then you might look at getting it put in to bridge mode and buying a router. The only reason to not use their modem is if its uses the Intel Puma 6 chip, as those chips are defective. Any modem with that chip in it generally causes pain and misery for the user. Some have gotten lucky but many have not. The most notable modem with this chip is the SB6190, but I have heard of ISP's using modems with this chip.

If it is the same as Spectrum in my area the free modem will be a Cisco DCP 3216, and you can pay $6/month extra to get a rebadged Netgear wireless AC unit.

I have the 100/10 plan and rarely do the speeds drop below 110 down and 12 up, Spectrum has been really good to me.
