Router died, replaced, can't access headless systems

The short version is I was running my IPS router in modem mode, connected to another router. That router seems to have died, so I did a quick reset on ISP router to turn it back into a router. I have internet again on my main system, but others remain inaccessible. They're headless so can't do manual ipconfig /renew. Should they detect the new network anyway? I've tried unplugging the network cable and putting it back on one of them, didn't help.

Are they configured for DHCP?

Yes. Kinda hoping it'll just detect and go. If not, I'll have to lug around a monitor+keyboard+mouse to them...

Did you restart the headless systems?  they should then contact the router to check/get another Ip address IIRC.

I don't have a way to nicely restart them other than to remote in, which I can't, or force reboot, which I want to avoid.

Ok, turned out it was Windows trying to be too smart. When it got the new network, it popped up the what network do you want it on screen, and it blocks incoming connections...

Ha, I gave up on being nice to my PCs and such long ago.. Yeah I'll avoid it if I can, but no more messing around for hours now, short time to try and fix and then yank that plug... had to do it today even, was doing some work on my ESXI build project and it wasn't going farther than my HBA SAS after a reboot, and couldn't even force close, so had to flcik the PSU switch off. IMO it's just one of those things that happens sometimes... maybe 5 times a year at most, so no big deal (depending on OS and what your machine is doing at the time of course).

In your case, yes if the servers (i'm guessing) are doing stuff, then yes try to find an alternative to yanking the plug... but on the other hand, if your servers can't connect because of issues with routers etc, then they are probably not in the middle of some intense writing or something anyway.

 

So is the issue completely fixed now? and what was the issue then? was it just a "blip" moment when you thought the worst had happened and it turned out to be windows instead not letting you connect to them?

The "can't connect to them" part is fixed, for now. The thing is, this was bought about as my original router wasn't working, but on a quick retest now, it is working. I don't know what's happening...

Damn, that's a strange one for sure... I don't have anything to offer unfortunately in the way of something to try with that issue. I hope you get it fixed or at the very least some suggestions of what to try. As a last resort kind of thing, you could always put the cable modem back in modem mode and grab a relatively inexpensive router to troubleshoot I guess... but hopefully you can get better suggestions than that, good luck dude

Well, I'm up and running again even if I'm slumming it with the ISP router... when I have time, I could risk putting the Asus back in place, see if that was a one-off. If it does happen again, I'll replace it with something else higher end.

 

I was actually looking for my old wired router to swap in place but I have no idea where it is now.

Cool, at least you can get on with some stuff then. Yeah, been there with not being able to find stuff, it's always when you most need it that you can't find that piece of junk you keep around for "just in case" purposes... otherwise you trip over it every other week
