4k vs UltraWide vs... for 2nd display

Mikealongo

Hi to everyone, i posted a few days ago a topic about getting a second monitor, i guess that the lack of coments was because of the lack of information, so im going to put all the information in hear (such as main purposse, budget, alternatives and so on):

+The main purposse will be using it as a second monitor for my pc (that means, web browsing while gaming, media content while gaming, chatting while gaming, productivity while working...). I would love to be able to play with my PS4 or Switch in it aswell, in Full screen mode, Picture in Picture or Picture by Picture (i remember watching some ultrawides monitors wich are capable to have two inputs one in each half correct me if im wrong (the "PIP" or "PBP" mode is not that usefull in that case because i will have my main monitor anyways so...), so i guess the input number is important in that case.

+Now im ussing a asus swift pg278q wich is a 1440p, 27 inches, G-Sync monitor (vital information because of the size, i guess i should go something like 27 inches)

The budget is something between 0 - 350€ more or less.

+The first alternatives at this moment are (keep in mind that you can recomend something better and more expensive if it is worth it):
-HP 27w: 1080p, 27 inches, IPS only one HDMI at 160€; not a big fan of it because of the low pixel density and the input lack.

-ASUS PB277Q; 1440p, 27 inches, Tn, 1 HDMI, 1 DP at 280€; i guess this is thea easy pick because its the same resolution and size as the current one, but at that price i wonder if going 4k or ultra wide is a better move.

-Samsung U28E590D: 4K, 28 inches, TN, 2 HDMI, 1 DP at 290€; I dont know if it is worth it for a second monitor to go with this one or if it is overkill, but really temptating... (LTT review) Edit (it have PIP and PBP, but its too old i guess)

-LG 29UB67-B or 29UM69G-B: 1080p ultrawide, "29 inches", the first one have 2 HDMI and 1 DP, the second one 1 HDMI 1 DP at 280€ both of them.

I dont know wich way to go, 1080p, 1440p, 4K, 1080p ultrawide or even 1440p ultrawide (i didnt consider that option yet), I want to know your thoughts about this and wich monitor would you recomend mi (not necesary one of the ones i mentioned)

Thanks to everyone =)

Go a ultrawide if you can afford one or even one of the cheap ones. Way more real estate for multitasking. 1440p UW can easily do 3 web browsers or such side by side

Hmm honestly, ultra wide is temting too, but remember that its going to be a Secondary monitor, in the main one I have G-sync, so my main concern is if the uw is going to be worth it and wich UW is the best to pick considerig my budget

Thanks for the replays =)

ultrawides are better imo for productivity and browsing although I prefer my 4k monitor for gaming. For browsing etc a 2560x1080p will probably be enough, but you might want to go for one with a decent VA or IPS panel with atleast ok color reproduction. shouldnt be hard to find a 1080p UW for less than 300e

I dont recommend 4K just because windows scaling still isnt great

Winning an argument with a woman step by step

step one - talk to her

step two - fight with her for 2 hours even if you are really right

step three - admit that she is right for the sake of your safety

step four - realize that you have accomplished nothing and she still thinks you were wrong and now she thinks you are even more stupid

keep in mind that it will be a 2 monitor setup so maybe going without the ultra wide is a better move if i can get better quality or better price/quality ratio.

  • 3 months later...

I wouldn't recommend an ultrawide as a secondary screen. You will have to move your head way to much to see anything. I will be way out off your vision if you are watching a movie for example. However an ultrawide as primary with a smaller screen as secondary could be handy.
