i5 8600k vs i7 8700

Hi,

I am wondering what CPU would be suited for my needs. i5 8600k or the i7 8700?

I will primarily be using my pc for gaming, adobe photoshop and illustrator and software development.

What do you guys think?

Wait two more weeks for the B- and H-chipsets to come out before getting the 8700.

I'd go with the 8700. Get an Asus board, or one that lets you turbo lock the chip.

R5 1600/R5 2600(April 19th) is the correct answer due to overall performance per dollar and socket longevity potentially.

otherwise i7 8700 if you're stuck on coffee lake

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

well i learned from the infamous adoredtv that the 8700 might have a problem with some motherboards - the 65W TDP meaning that the cpu would only sustain around 3.7 GHz on all cores

maybe someone here could tell you more about this?

Probably not an issue, won't know until lower end motherboards are out

interesting anandtech has 4.3 for all 6 cores on their motherboard, theres a mention:

"Nonetheless, we were able to obtain the per-core turbo ratios for each of the new processors for our motherboard. Given Intel's statement above, it seems to suggest that each motherboard might have different values for these, with no Intel guidelines given." (written in october, idk if anything major changed about this)

could you run prime for 5-10 minutes watching all cores in hwinfo?

quick search:

Spoiler

"The 65W TDP limit is meant to kick in after several seconds for Cinebench. For the first several seconds it will run at max all-core turbo (4.3 GHz on i7-8700). After approximately 8 seconds it will drop to 4.1 GHz or 4.2 GHz. This is the 65W limit taking effect." - intel, https://digiworthy.com/2017/12/07/core-i7-8700-vs-8700k-fast-platform/

" According to ark, your cpu TDP is 65w, way lower than 8700K 95w. It dont matter if your chip is being cooled or not, the cpu will drop frequency if TDP is reached if you dont raise the current maximum level. For this go to the motherboard, as a Z370 motherboard you cant change multiplier but you can set current limit to 255. This should allow your cpu to go beyond TDP, as long as you manage to cool it." - http://www.overclock.net/forum/5-intel-cpus/1643662-intel-i7-8700-has-problem.html#post26493147

"If you want to ensure that all the cores on your 8700 are running 4.3GHz during stress loads and you have the thermal headroom, you have increase the CPU power limits in the UEFI BIOS settings. I had my 8400 throttling to 3.3GHz in Prime95 before I increased the power limits." - https://www.reddit.com/r/intel/comments/7gmqn8/recommended_motherboard_for_i7_8700/dqlbkvn/

https://communities.intel.com/thread/122550

so basically what they all say is, if you want it to run 4.3 GHz, you have to run it outside of its 65W specification

gaming wise absolutely the 8600k on a mobo that allow you to clock at 4.9-5.0 ghz, and you are done

new info: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W2HuMxB0qT0

for those who dont want to watch full video:

1) motherboards that deliver only 65W wont allow the 8700 to run all cores at 4.3 GHz

2) motherboards that allow changing power limit can run it at 4.3 GHz

3) stock cooler isnt able to cool the cpu enough with raised power limit, so it wont sustain 4.3 GHz
