Like an idiot I switched motherboards before I considered unlinking the Win 7 Pro key, let alone installing a new Win 7 Pro on another drive. If I upgrade my OS to Win 8.1 will I still have the BSODs from changing the motherboard? I refuse to give in to Microsoft and the wishes for everyone to be on Win 10.

Can you not just glean the key off the computer? You can just phone Microsoft to change it over I belive

You've changed motherboards but kept your Windows installation. While this is possible, no one can really assist in stopping BSODs unless you try doing a clean installation with proper drivers from the manufacturer's website for your operating system. Check to see that your manufacturer has drivers for the OS you want to use on their support website, then clean reinstall Windows using the key that would have been included in the retail packaging for the copy of Windows you have, and load up the drivers.

Depending on board, there is another option...

set the drive controller in the BIOS to plain old IDE. Might get you into safe mode where you can fix things from there

NOTE: I no longer frequent this site. If you really need help, PM/DM me and my e.mail will alert me.

Reinstall Windows. This isn't about keys, its about drivers. If you have OEM key, with Win7 and older it depends if its branded or not. Win8/.1 OEMs will lock to mobo, Win10 and its 50-50 from what I've seen. Some get it working, others don't. Some crying to MS phone service might help, but I've heard that once they check key and see its grey market one, they don't help. So really no one answer to that. Only retail keys are certain to work. Or non-branded Win7s.

Only Windows 10 is robust enough to handle massive hardware changes and boot successfully (Windows 8 is OK at it, Windows 7, as you can see, not so much, same with older version of Windows). You need to re-install Windows.

My guess, is the same as Radium_Angel. Your Windows was incorrectly installed in the first place, where you installed Windows 7, while having the motherboard set your SATA controller to emulate the old IDE controller instead of enjoying the full capabilities of SATA. The new motherboard has it set to AHCI by default, or you set it. OR, it can be the reverse. The old one was set to AHCI mode, and the new one is set to IDE.

Usually, motherboard manufacture default BIOS/UEFI settings are designed to reduce support calls to them. So, they assume you'll install Windows XP, and not Windows 7 or 10. So everything is set to legacy mode, even if i(and many options does) t impacts your system performance.
