Pfsense on single port laptop

Gilbeh

Hi guy :)

I’m looking into running pfsense on a Dell Vostro 3650 and an 8 port unmanaged gigabit switch.

Will it be possible? Or recommended?

and most of all I’ll be getting a fiber connection soon so will it be able to handle gigabit internet?

thanks in advance

Assuming vlans work fine you can do this, but you also need a managed switch.

USB internet is a option, but if you don't have usb 3 it will be slow, and support is bad often.

Really, just spend a bit more on a different systm.

Id stay away from usb. Do you have usb 3? that model number doesn't bring up a laptop.

Does your ISP inclued a router?

Oh sorry it’s a 3560, yeah it has usb 3.

the isp router is a D-Link DSL-G256DG, from what I understand it’s not the modem, and has a feature that lets my isp remoting into my network for trouble shooting (TR-069) which is very undesirable.

What special features do you want from pfsense?

Id use that then for now, and then replace it with something like a edgerouter. You will also need a wifi ap with this laptop.

There are lots of issues it seems with usb nics, id stay away from them.

Mostly not using my isp provided one... I think I’ll have to find something less janky
