How many tb do you need?

Right now id get these https://www.bestbuy.com/site/wd-easystore-8tb-external-usb-3-0-hard-drive-black/5792401.p?skuId=5792401

180usd for a wd red 8tb is a good deal.

For cpu, id probably go g4560 and b250 board. You can spend more, but really not needed for what your doing. 8gb of ram should also be fine here. Get a h200 if you need more drives.

Stock cooler is fine here.

No need for ssd cache, zil won't help here, and a l2arc really don't help much most of the time.

Wireless access is done by your wifi access point(you probably already have one). This box has no wireless.

Id go 8tb mirrors, fewer bigger drives is normally what id suggest.

That 8tb drive is a red or rebranded red drive.

You don't need a nas drives, a dekstop drive will work fine here, but the nas ones have  a few extra features that can help

 - TLER, this limits max error time to around 7 sec, great for hardware raid cards, won't help in software raid(aka freenas, zfs, unraid, md)

- Vibration restance. This helps in multibay. The ironwolf/red drives have a limited vibration restance restures, where the red pro/ironwolf pro/ enterprise drives have the full features. Since you have a desktop case this won't be a issue.

- Longer warranty. Always nice to have, but often not very usefull, due to the bathtub curve of failutres(most hdds fail in the first few months or after about 5-7 years, the extra 2 or 3 years don't save you much, but always nice to have)

- Lower power(often) wd reds are 5400rpm, use less power, less heat. A bit slower but your almost always network limiited anyways.

- Somre more firmware tweaks like no head parking, can make it a bit faster or last longer in a nas.

Sounds good basically i have kids running around my room and having bump here and there is normal im going to have the server in the living room soo (longer warranty , vibration resistance, lower power) are what i need.

The drives won't help with that, there made to dapen vrbration from other dirve, and that won't casue a issue at all with any drives.

OK , so how im going to manage the drives , daisy chaining the drives limits performance so wouldnt i need a mobo with 8 sata 6 ports or more?

Not what id suggest

why all the 2tb drves, your much better off with 2x 8 or 10tb drives and adding more later.

Why aren't you using the psu you already have?

Board seems like a odd choice, why only a itx board in a matx case?

I wouldn't bother with ecc here, it won't make a difference .

woops , psu were did that come from , i took the board since it has 8 sata ports and usb port for freenas inside the rig ,the ecc is not necesary why? this is necesary

if you want to ensure the integrity of your stored data on this NAS server ...

But ECC isn't a cure all solution there can still be corrution in your storage system, and the chance of a memory error is low. Id just get a normal desktop Board.

And why 8 2tb drive.

Thats what id go personally. The ecc board isn't a bad idea though, but id get a board like this instead.

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813182995

Its cheaper, has 4 dimm slots, has impi, and more pcie, and m.2

Ram wise,

8gb will be fine here. You dont' seem to need much performance here, and the arc doesn't help much with a media server.

how much are each person using it?

If there steaming media, this system is more than fast enough and you can get away with 8gb of ram easily.

If your gonna get that board, might as well get ecc, not much extra, and peace of mind is nice.

Truly transcoding 4k will be a no-go for pretty much any system. My NAS/Plex server runs on my "old" 4690k which will completely max out, failing to keep up, when trying to transcode a 4k video, resulting in buffering every 30 seconds (so no subtitles unfortunately). DirectPlay-ing is fine though.
