Upgrading gaming pc from 2013

hajsveen

I’m helping my cousin upgrading his computer from 2013. Late in 2017 he bought a Asus GTX 1050 EXPEDITION OC as an upgrade. The card didn’t help at all and all games (even Minecraft is lagging). Now he wants to upgrade the machine with a budget of $800. Keep in mind that we live in Norway and all prices is usually 25% more expensive here so it is probably a less bang for the buck than usual.

Anyway. He will keep the GTX 1050 and his PSU by Corsair (430W). So far we have picked this system:

Ram: Ballistix Sport LT DDR4 8GB
CPU: Intel Core i5-8600K processor
MB: ASUS ROG STRIX Z370-F Gaming, S1151
Cooler: Be Quiet! Pure Rock CPU cooler

I feel a bit rusty on this topic since I haven’t payed attention the last year to the new releases so I don’t know if there is any compatibility issues here that I have overlooked.

It would be nice with some feedback and opinions if anyone here knows a better option. As mentioned earlier, things are pricy here.

Thank you!

I would spend a little less on the CPU cooler, go with a Hyper 212Evo or Cryorig H7–they do great for OCing. That processor wayyyy outweighs how strong that card is. The GTX 1050 is better matched with an i3 8100 or ryzen 3 1200. I highly suggest you change the GPU and aim for 16GB of ram if possible. Though I know you said it’s more expensive over there!

I should have asked this before I posted my thoughts.

Well, Minecraft is CPU intensive and Java sucks.

It’s important to mention that a powerfull CPU is no problem since the graphics card can be upgraded easily later on. And the Hyper 212evo doesn’t cost any different from the BC one

if you want a cheap upgrade then a used i7/Xeon off eBay will work just fine.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X Heatsink: Gelid Phantom Black GPU: Palit RTX 3060 Ti Dual RAM: Corsair DDR4 2x8GB 3000Mhz mobo: Asus X570-P case: Fractal Design Define C PSU: Superflower Leadex Gold 650W

Yes a good CPU upgrade to a 4 core would do well. Also upgrading that cars would be a plus.

But the system we came up with has all compatible parts. Is that right?

You would need to buy a 3rd generation or 4th generation i7 which should be cheap-ish. Also, search for an extra 4gb stick of RAM, you could find one on eBay cheap and you'd get noticeable performance increases. You would buy DDR3 RAM. The GTX 1050 will work in that motherboard too.

In Recap:

You need a 3rd/4th gen i5 or i7

I'd recommend an extra 4GB of DDR3 Memory

And enjoy your gaming machine for your cousin.

For that sized card I would strongly recommend a ryzen 5 1500 and a b350 motherboard of somekind, up to you as is the ram. But staright away youll save hundreds, depending on your location, on your cpu alone.

8600K is overkill, you'd more likely want to pair that with a 1070.
