One of my friends has decided that he doesn't like his GTX 970. It is not delivering the performance in VR that he is looking for, even though the limiting factor is likely the games engine. In some other games he is limited by the frame buffer and is looking at moving to a new card. He has been curious about AMD cards for a while and would like one of them. He ended up finding out about the R9 390X and fell in love with it. The high power draw and insane heat output is something that he finds attractive, despite most people thinking the contrary. He has tasked me with acquiring the new card but the problem is that there are not a huge number of them available on the used market.

 

My question is, what is the performance difference between the 390 and the 390X and also in relation to the 970 (I know that last part is a bit of a tricky question, but humor me).

My question would be can you actually find one easily?  I would have thought they'd all have gone to miners or be horribly overpriced, even more so than nvidia equivalents.

A 390X is about 8% better according to UserBenchmark. Mind you, neither of those cards are "VR ready" compared to something like an RX 480/580.

I've been seeing a lot of 390s on ebay, the 390Xs only come up once a week or so.

 

I also should have mentioned that he wants one of the triple fan coolers from Sapphire.

390x is to the 390 what the 1080ti is 1080; nearly double the power on a single card

 

however it is quite an inefficient card, you'd be better off with a 580 for better performance without causing a thermal meltdown

Yeah if you can, get one of those, I have the Sapphire Fury and can attest that the cooler is fantastic

don't be crazy, the 390x is only a few percent higher in performance.

If he gets 390X (8GB), might as well get 2 of them. CF needed to make performance noticeably better.
