What graphics card for 1440p 60Hz gaming

MaciejT
Go to solution Solved by Darkseth,

GTX 1080. Even if it's only 10-12% more performance~, you WANT more performance.

Final Fantasy 15: I sit at 40-60 fps~ maxed out ( no shadow libs), depending on whats going on. Only thanks to G-Sync, it runs smooth and doesn't bother me (no tearing or stuttering). If i had a 1440p / 60 Hz Monitor, i would HAVE to reduce settings in order to get to a clean 60 fps lock. Otherwise, the game would NOT be smooth for me.

Even a 1080 is struggling here to keep 60 fps up. The 1070 ti will struggle 10% more.

Kingdom Come deliverance. Also, you can get the game to below 40 fps on a GTX 1080 - maxed out.

GTA 5 will not be 60 fps if you max out everything.

Ghost Recon Wildlands sits at 45-50 fps maxed out - at the beginning driving around. Later with action it might be even lower.

There are alot of Games today, where a GTX 1080 will NOT get a clean 60 fps lock on 1440p, if you rather want ultra than High. You do want all the performance you can get.

Can you afford a 1080? Get it. Can you NOT afford it? Then get the 1070 ti instead.

Don't forget, you can't have enough GPU power. There will always be a way to bring it down.

If a 1070 ti is enough for you, instead of a GTX 1080, only YOU can decide.

Btw: 10% fps difference doesn't seem much. But if those 10% make the difference between a clean 60 fps with V_Sync on (no tearing, no stuttering), and a 55 fps stutterfest with V-Sync on (or Tearing-fest with V-Sync OFF), it will feel like 50% difference.

now.. Which model.

On a GTX 1080, Palit Jetstream or the Gamerock, and also the Gainward Phoenix are the hands down absolute best Coolers you can get. There is no other GTX 1080, that will be this "silent" under Load. Because the Heatsink is huge af, and the Fans never exceed 1000-1100 rpm - for a GPU this is very silent.

Asus Strix is almost double as loud. So no recommendation for that.

Zotac AMP! Extreme, MSI Gaming X, EVGA FTW are all decent. But no match for the Palit/Gainward models.

On a GTX 1070 ti, similar. But MSI Gaming X, and Asus Strix are here also very quiet, and Zotac AMP! Extreme. In fact, Strix is pretty damn silent. PCGH measured 0.8 Sone loudness (while the 1080 strix has 3.6 Sone loudness..) I have no idea, how they can fuck up so bad on the GTX 1080, but nail it this hard on the 1070 ti - Both chips have 180w TDP heat output, so the difference shouldn't be this big :P

I got i5-8600k and need to buy graphics card for 1440p 60 Hz future proof AAA gaming.

I don't believe that cards will be cheaper in foreseeable  future so I want to buy good stuff now. Good and silent without water cooling :).

What do you recommend? Palit 1080 Super Jet Stream (it's now in Poland for 950$) or maybe 1070/1070 Ti?

The 1070TI is pretty much the same as the 1080.

Obviously, a 1080 is the best choice for future proofing, unless you can get the 1080TI.

If you can't get the 1080TI, then the 1080.

No reason to go below that. 1080 also wins against the 1070TI due to its faster memory.

I'm running a 980 Ti on a 1440p ultrawide 100Hz panel.

I haven't had any issues running whatever titles I want.

The 980Ti goes toe-to-toe with 1070 today.

For that reason, if you wanted to do 1440p 60hz, I'd say, if it'll save you money, a GTX 1070 is likely going to be plenty.

Except OP wants to 'future proof for AAA titles'. Either way, agreed 1070 minimum, and as high as he's willing to pay for.

CPU: AMD Sempron 2400+ / MOBO: Abit NF7-S2G / GPU: WinFast A180BT 64MB / RAM: Mushkin DDR333 256MBx2 / HDD: Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM 120GB

lol, I somehow missed that. xD

"'future proof for AAA titles'" yeah....

If that's the case, just buy the most expensive card you can afford even if it's completely overkill for your current needs.

I mean, that's what I did when I bought a 980Ti while I still had a 1080p 60Hz panel.

I wanted room to grow around the card and I did just that.

OP, good luck.

Few games where you need to put shadow at high instead of ultra maybe :P

games like PUBG BF1

I'm using a 1070 for 1440p at high settings in pretty much all my games. Solid 60 FPS or higher. However, I'm pretty sure the 1070 TI is better price to performance.

For such a small price difference, go with the 1080.

The price between them is almost the same everywhere, only £20 difference in the UK. I still don't understand the reason behind putting the 1070ti out.

But yeah, absolutely go with the 1080.

Yeah for sure, 1080 is just better and more future proof than the 1070ti. Both are good cards though.

I'd say a 1080 is pretty future proof for 1440P, given that the 980Ti was future proof for 1440P and has been for a couple of years now. I still run everything at 1440P at ultra right now on my 980Ti, and that is a 3 year old card.

If you can afford it, 1080Ti will be "more future proof" of course, but that is getting very expensive. No graphics card is good value at the moment, so just get the best you can afford.

Did you do that on purpose? 'Cause ya gotta stop saying that. There's no universally accepted definition or even close enough to one for it to be used intelligently.

at that point better lower some shadow and post processing video settings than live with the stuttering xD:P

what are you on about?

The guy asks if a 1080 will be future proof for 1440P 60Hz gaming. I'd say yes, because you can expect a top end card like that to give you at least 60fps for about 3-4 years in all games. There is enough data from previous generations' cards (680, 780, 980, etc.) to make such claims. Everybody can make their own decision on what 'future proof' means, but I'd say being able to game without compromise for at least 3 years would meet most people's definition.

Similarly, a 1070 has less headroom, and so will only give you about 2 years' worth of 1440P 60Hz before games will become more demanding and it will drop below 60fps. Similarly, a 1060 has EVEN less headroom, and will barely get you 60fps at 1440P even today.

You can also look at it this way: Nvidia releases new cards every 2 years. You can expect a series xx80 card of generation 1 to be similar to a series xx70 card of generation 2, similar to a xx60 series card of generation 3, and so on. A 780 was similar in performance to a 970, which is similar to a 1060. This is because Nvidia mostly positions the xx80 about 30% faster than the xx70,which is 30% faster than the xx60, and so on. While the generational gains are usually in the 30% range as well.

So a top end card today (GTX 1080 released 2016) will perform similar to a high end card in 2 years (GTX 2070 released ETA 2018) and a medium range card in 4 years (GTX 3060 released ETA 2020)

So contrary to popular "belief", yes you actually can know what to expect when you buy an Nvidia card, they have been quite predictable.

I would imagine it had something to do with mining. Moar cores without the worse (for mining) memory on the 1080.

That's an F in the profile pic
